Can someone please explain to me why Jimmy Cheek is involved in our football coaching search AT ALL??? I'm serious when I ask that bc apparently he is involved bc folks are blaming him for Gruden and now Strong. He is our Chancellor, and Dave Hart is our AD. Not sure I understand why he'd be involved other than tangentially.

because he is a power hungry moron control freak that doesnt know his butt froma whole in the ground and he cant stand not being involved! he wants to keep everyone under his thumb!

You guys need to interview Chizik. The guy won a National Championship 2 years ago! He deserves a call, IMO.

    Good luck!

This is ridiculous. I can't believe we got TURNED DOWN by a Big East coach. Now what? Fedora isn't interested and Butch Jones just took the CU job. Do we hire Fulmer back? Do we go after Petrino? Man, I would hate to be Dave Hart right now!

I agree but don't forget Louisville is going to the ACC so that probably made a difference. i know it still isn't the SEC but it's better than the Big East. Just FYI

This is an absolute joke. I am ashamed of our administration. And being a alum (00-04), I am even more embarrassed.

The fact that we did not use a firm to go out and be the intermediary between prospective coaches and our university is the most troubling part.

This administration has completely dropped the ball on this. And I honestly believe that it has been kept so secret bc of hart/cheek wanted to save face and not be publicly humiliated. This way they can comeback and say whatever they want and make it out to be something else beyond their control that has led to the various coaches turning us down.

Go get Bobby Petrino or Butch Davis and be done with it. We cannot afford to be offering millions of dollars and having B level coaches turn us down.

Listen to what I'm saying....,,"mike gundy and Charlie strong turned our program down". We are now easily the laughing stock of college football..... If we weren't already....how do you continue to recruit this year? What do you say to recruits?? It's shameful.

Couldn't have said better Jett...particularly the recruiting observation. Hart is going to have alot of explaining to do. The apparent leadership vacuum is truly alarming.

agree if he keeps the momentum going in the acc he has an easier path to the bcs/national champ. in the ACC than he would in the SEC, and the ACC is still an upgrade over big east

I totally agree! His credentials are better than anyone that have turned us down and definately better than anyone that is left.

I agree. Strong is a pretty good coach, but we shouldn't break the bank for him. This is the only really stellar season he's had at Louisville, and it included a couple of losses to teams that shouldn't have beaten him.

First I want to say I have much respect for UT's tradition and huge rabid fanbase.

Strong has turned our program around in an amazingly short period of time. In just 3 years we went from rock bottom to Sugar Bowl. This years team has mostly freshmen and sophomores on our 2 deep roster. For them to go 10-2; even in a weak Big East gives me a lot of confidence in where Charlie will have this team in 2 years, when we enter the ACC and Bridgewater is a senior!

There's no doubt in my mind UT will get a good coach and be back in the top of the SEC soon. Good luck and always beat UK's arse.

  • I'm one of those "Bible Hugging So-Called Fans" you refer to and, yes, I am concerned about Petrino's character. You can even argue that UT could put clauses for morals in his contract and make him pay $10 million if he left the program, but those things might not stop him from doing something stupid again.

Prisons are filled with people that have been given multiple chances and still couldn't get it right. And no, I'm not saying Petrino deserves to be in jail for his past indiscretions. But he did hire someone that was the least qualified for the job because she was his mistress. He also lied to his bosses about it and then tried to cover it up further. And that's just his Arkansas misadventure. When he was coaching Louisiville, he tried to backdoor Tuberville and get the Auburn job. And then there's the way he left the Falcons in the middle of the night without even having guts enough to address his team.

Petrino can win games, but he's a bomb waiting to explode and we don't need him coaching the Vols when it happens. Maybe, just maybe he has finally learned his lesson, but if he hasn't it isn't if, but when he'll go off next. We can't afford to take a chance on a guy that could leave us with another black eye in a year or two down the road.

I'd rather Hart hire some hotshot coordinator than go with Petrino.

This has to be a trolling joke. First coach to ever finish 7th in the SEC West. He's Joker Phillips without the painfully obvious name.

I don't get up why people are bringing up other schools. I'm not coming at you TennVolFan. But those other schools that have made hires shot low and got what they went after. UT shot high and they still aren't even close to as low as the other hires. You choose, Fedora or Malzahn... Davis or Beleima... let's try to keep reality in front of us here.

Well, the problem is, all our backups are gone. Sure Fedora or Golden would be good hires, but what if they say no? If Arkansas gets Bielema and we get some no-name, I think that reflects horribly on the University. Tennessee is a better job than Arkansas or Oklahoma State or Louisville (or at least it should be!). Everybody in the world knows we are down to our fifth choice hire (Gruden, Fisher, Gundy, Strong all said no). That alone speaks volumes! There still might be some dark horse candidate we never saw coming (Bill Cowher, anyone?), but if we don't get a home run hire, it's pitch forks and torches at the AD and chancellor's houses. I think Hart and Cheek should know their jobs are on the line if they flub this up. Maybe Cheek is more concerned with making UT Martin an OVC powerhouse. I dunno, but his is getting ridiculous!!!

Well, Tennessee should start looking for a new athletic director and a new chancellor right now! If you get spurned by your top three candidates, it is clear that there are significant, major, major, organizational problems within the athletic department and the university that need to be addressed. I fear we are entering a 20 year cycle of irrelevance for Tennessee football unless we clean house at all levels. Things have gone to hell since Joe Johnston and Doug Dickey.

So how does that house cleaning get initiated....seriously? Not sure of the chain of command w/the state university system. Does the Gov get involved? No doubt that something is really broken @ the leadership ranks.

  • We might not be playing in a bowl game this year, but we could talk about the more than 50 bowls that the Vols have been too. Even the best of football schools, which, historically from a winning percentage and total wins Tennessee is in the Top 10, have off periods just like football teams at basketball school qualify for a bowl game occasionally.

Understand everything you say... I guess I am trying to think more long term. I am frustrated with this search but still trying to keep the faith.
