Sugar Bowl Attendance

  • Just heard on 104.5 The Zone that the attendance for the Sugar Bowl was a couple thousand LESS than the Music City Bowl. Seems strange.

  • Also lowest for any BCS game, ever.

  • perfect example of how broken the bowl system is. It's what happens when you get a team that thinks it doesnt have a chance against a team who thinks they are playing against a cupcake with absolutely nothing at stake. Neither fan bases are going to travel and the locals could care less. What happens, though, if that game is part of a playoff where it's win or go home..? bit more interesting i think, and im guessing much better attendance.

  • If we have playoff games that are win or go home, the attendance will be much better. I think after the four team playoff starts, attendance will be through the roof and this will be motivation to expand the playoffs to eight teams, b/c of more money to be made. The bowl games will continue to decline, b/c of flat screens, economy and just not a lot of interest in the two mediocre teams playing in them.

It could also be the time or day during the week that the game is played on. I like for more games to be played on the weekend. This could also help, b/c people have to go to work during the week.

Do you think we could ever see a time where there are no bowl games, only a playoff system like in Division II/FCS?

No. I think there will always be bowls due to all the teams in college and the money that is made on them. Plus it is a good expirience for teams to go to a bowl and they also get good gift bags with tons of stuff. Bowls are a good thing for teams that are not going to make the playoffs.

No, I don't think so. The bowl games are a permanent part of the CFB culture. If there eventually is more of a playoff than the four teams that is the current plan, the playoff would include the bowls. In other words, the playoff games would be bowls .... The Sugar Bowl College Championship Quarterfinal, etc.

The problem you will have if the venues for the win or go home games is at a neutral site there are only so many fans who could travel for more than 1 game a year. Maybe the casual fan takes up the slack to fill up a stadium but seems doubtful.

Oh I agree. I think they should have playoff games at the home of the higher seed. I don't much care for the neutral site for playoff games, but I do like it for the championship game.
