Tenn. Staff Dropped The Ball On Crawley...

  • hdrizzle21 said...

It looks as if CB Kenneth Crawley is going to qualify as he now has a passing ACT score. Even worse then that is he might end up at UGA. UGA could end up getting Crawley, Redmond, and Dawson. Not good when we are scrambling to take a guy in the secondary. It would've been nice to keep Crawley and still add Bonner.

+1 for the info but I disagree with your evaluation of what happened. Imagine that.biggrin

Totally understandable. I think we could've strung it out a little longer. I really liked Crawley's film, honestly reminds me physically of Dre Kirkpatrick. I think if it came down to it, would you take the chance with Crawley, who is potentially an instant impact player at our weakest position next year on defense, or tell Daniel Gray, a project CB to walk. I like Gray's speed but the guy is small and there's little chance he contributes next year, I would take the chance w/ Crawley, sign Bonner, Redmond, or Shelton, and tell Gray thanks but no thanks if that's what it came to.

He is a talent but I think you have to look at McNiel's potential impact at safety and whether we can move our 'cajun cover man' back to CB. It's a trade off between Gray's upside(speed and quickness vs Crawley's downside(qualifying, getting past the clearinghouse and staying qualified). If they have been thinking they have a chance at Bonner they are willing to take a risk on his behavior over the academic issues. The point is we don't know all the dynamics that went into the decisions that were made.

You're right nobody knows how it will play out. I have my opinion and you have yours which is great. I also hope we can move Waggner to CB. We will see how Brewer progresses as well, he was a huge disappointment last year, I hope McNeil can make a run at that spot... It would be tough to start a true freshman in McNeil at SS against a passing attack like NC State week 1 though, man is that scary.

Freshman are always scary. I think McNeil is close to JJ in ability but not quite but he could start and do pretty well. Gonna' get interesting. Hearing that LM is going to visit Ok State and that could prove more of a threat than we realize or want.

UMMM next year isn't the only year these guys will get to play. Grays upside is tremendous and most teams including ours next year shouldn't really have to depend on freshman coming in and being day 1 starters. It happens sometimes and that is great but you can't count on it. We had some first year players last year who should make great strides in their second year in the program thus allowing Swag to move back to corner. I think you might be suprised at the difference in our coverage next year and remember more pressure on the passer takes pressure off the backend of our Defense. The coaches liked his film but they showed alot of class and did the right thing for Crawley and for UT by not "stringing it out a little longer".

It's more of a Rasheed Wallace thing, instead of throwing out T's, I'm getting thrown downvotes. It comes w/ the reputation.

Upvoted you several times but I think some guys are seeing the OP and not going deeper.

Agree. To each their own, but I feel like downvotes are NOT about simply disagreeing with someone's post.

If Drizzle's premise is correct (that Crawley still has a shot at qualifying), I tend to agree with him. But impossible to know yet and never fun speculating on academics.

  • So what some of you guys are saying is that UT and Dooley need to string the recruit along until the last minute and then if it doesn't look like he is a sure qualifier then say sorry but looks like we are gonna take this guy who is a sure thing....... I could just imagine some on the board saying how awful Dooley handled the situation by stringing this poor kid along and that now we will never be able to recruit in the District again.

This is true. He has 2 weeks to prove to our staff that he can get qualified and convince them that he can stay qualified. Right or wrong, that's the only way he's signing with Tennessee and I think it's a wise move by Dooley.

Sorry bro but am I reading your post clearly? We dropped him,now it seems he will have tha grades, and you think he will come back?I wished he would but that ship has sailed!

Everybody thinks we dropped him. What proof do you have that he didn't drop us? Dooley may have his faults but making bad recruiting decisions isn't one of them. I don't think the coaching staff dropped anything here. Of course, I have just as much proof as you do.

I was being sarcastic. But almost everyone was saying fit was because of grades with no proof that it was grades.I just hate that we lost out on him!
