Tennessee adds JUCO cornerback

Cornerback Riyahd Jones of Garden City (Kan.) Community College announced Friday that he would be signing with Tennessee, choosing the Vols over Kansas State and Indiana.

The biggest thing I get is that Bonner, even with his uncertain status, still loves Tennessee and couldn't help but sing its praise. Hopefully the coaching staff pays attention because it appears that he might have matured since his undisclosed incident.

I don't know if you guys were listening to Swain yesterday on TSR, but he made a good point that JUCO guys are all about business when they come in to play for their new school. Jones has a kid too, so I'm sure he realizes how big this opportunity is for himself as well as his family.

Hate to sound ignorant because I far from being a recruiting Guru but how does 22 tackles and a couple pass break ups at a Community college qualify him to play in the SEC?? I love any JUCO signing but I must be missing something here

I liked his announcement at the bottom of the article, though I'm not sure what he meant by 'don't judge me on where I'm from.' I know of no reason to pre-judge either him or where he's from.
Very glad he sounds like he'll come in immediately ready to go to work. I think he'll be an early enrollee in a few weeks, which is even better.

i guess if no one else is going to point out the obvious, I will. I've never seen the guy play. Never seen any video of him. Im happy for any kid who wants to wear the Orange, but, we arent going to gain on the likes of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, SC with 2-3 star JUCO corners. And before you start downvoting me, ask yourselves - what's the reason that none of our competitors were offering this kid? Why do recruiting services not see him as an elite talent? Are our coaches the only ones who can evaluate talent accurately? As long as we are being all honest here, these are tough, honest questions that need to be asked.
So, while we can "boom" this recruitment all we want, Florida and Alabama are saying boom to another 4-5 star commit. Downplay the recruiting rankings all you want, the teams at the top of the recruiting rankings are the teams that win and compete for championsips. We didnt need to fire Dooley to go out and recruit the same level of talent that Dooley would have signed. And there are no "free passes" in the recruiting biz. You dont get to take a year off because you just got hired. CBJ needs to start signing and recruiting the elite kids, or we will stay exactly where we are.

Sounds and appears to be a good kid on his way to becoming a man. His statement is strong and as far as I can remember, granted the ol' memory can be a bit hazy, the only one that addresses the fans specifically in an attempt to bring ppl to not pre judge and to pull together. If he is excited about being a Vol...I am proud to have the kid repping the O&W... Welcome young man and I hope you find your niche at the UT. GO Vols...VFL!!!
