The #1 common denominator I can find to a coach making it is....

  • How good their 2nd class is/ or after their 1st season the class they sign. (when turning a program around/rebuilding)

    Go look at Sabans. Go look at numerous coaches this year that just landed their 2nd class. Programs give you 3-4 years now to get it done. Your 1st class helps you but the 2nd class will make or break you that 3rd and if you make it that 4th year. 2014 is the decider.......this one is gravy.

    Feel free to post the 2nd classes or 1st class after their 1st season of some coaches that turned a program around.

    2010s would have been Kiffins.

    2011s was Dooleys. He missed on 4-5 DBs of the 7 he signed even though BR and Lanier was good....and then BR got hurt in 2012 and Lanier didnt make qualify for "UT". He missed on an elite RB (even though Lane is a solid back). He missed on 1-2 stud LBs like Lamar Dawson. He missed on 2+ DTs. He missed on an elite DE pass rusher. He lost a few top recruits in that class like Clear and Arnett. Jones cant afford to do that in year #2 at LB, DT, DE, RB and OT.

    Saban 5+ years ago
    Meyer
    Freeze
    Both Kellys
    Hoke
    Muschamp (we will see)
    Golden
    Mora
    Fisher

    I think even guys like Butch Davis and Petrino would fit this.....sometimes its not a top 10 class but it could be a class that is 15th when normally they ranked in the 20s and 30s more often than not prior that HC getting there.

  • I think that we will have a great class next year if this staff keeps being relentless on the trail like they have been so far. I firmly believe that this staff will get us back to where we need to be in the not so distant future. This fan base is too passionate and there are too many resources for us not to be successful.

  • Saban: 1st year:17th 2nd year: 3rd, which included Julio Jones
    Hoke: 1st year: Not in Top 25 2nd year: 7th
    C. Kelly: 1st year: Not in Top 25 2nd year: 22nd (meh)
    B. Kelly: 1st year: 21st 2nd year: 9th
    Mora: 1st year: Not in Top 25 2nd year: 18th

    *Note, these are via ESPN. I'm not sure I like their numbers, but it gives you an idea...

    The point is, you're right. I don't think you'd call any of these coaches failures at their schools. Next year can be a dream class for UT, and I think CBJ is the right guy to make that dream come true.

  • I agree. With as little time as CBJ had to recruit here, i'm pretty satisfied. especially with how he generates a relationship with everyone he recruits. that takes time.. next year will be something special if he proves his team can compete with SEC teams. imo #VFL

  • I like the 8+ JR days and the HS coaching satellite clinics he will do off campus. He is more open to the media too. Very visible. Just bring me the big uglies!

    There is one MAJOR difference between Coach Butch Jones and Derek Dooley... Coach Jones is exactly that... a coach. Yes he is a great recruiter, and seems to be a good man but first and foremost he is a football Coach. Derek Dooley stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and picked up the lingo so he could use it on his impostor tour.

    Get behind Coach Jones and the rest of this staff, they are PROVEN WINNERS and wont settle for anything less. As far as the recruiting classes next season is concerned, he has a year to establish those relationships with the players of the highest caliber both on the field and off. This next class will be top 10 or better. JMO

    I am fully behind Jones. This was not about Dooley vs Jones as that is impossible to compare their classes at this point. This thread had ONLY to do with a trend for coaches that had success turning around/ rebuilding a program at this level.

    There is no doubt the two HCs are very different and Butch is a more proven winner doing it 4 times in 6 years at 2 different schools/ conferences. I like the focus Butch has on recruiting instate and many other things like embracing all aspects of our history/traditions of our program.
