The Best Staff?

  • From all the rumblings I've heard it sounds like a lot of Cincy guys are coming here...which raises the question, Was Butch Jones just talking, or his he actually prepared to put together an SEC staff? No doubt his coaching staff has done well, but that's the Big East. Not to knock any team up there, but the SEC is a tad different when it comes down to X's and O's. We scheme defensively and it doesn't seem like too high of a priority up there. Wes, Kevin, Ryan- whatcha think? I may be barking up the wrong tree, but I just don't buy in to an all Cincy/Tn staff.

I totally agree. We shredded that defense two years ago. I wasn't sold on Butch but I like his desire to be here and his optimism but I just don't know if his staff from Cincy is the best staff we can get.

  • He was being hyperbolic, trying to fire the fan base up just like he was when he claimed to be a lifelong UT fan and that this was the best job in America.

The guy runs a different system, and he'd rather have his guys who know that system run it. That's fine. He just needs to bring in some ace recruiters to fill the staff out. It's not about winning this recruiting class, it's about contending in 2014.

I hear you but being successful in this recruiting cycle and contending in 2014 aren't mutually exclusive.

  • I didn't buy into that statement too much, but I think what was happening was it was 1/3 talk, 1/3 his opinion, and 1/3 true.
He has to say that, and so does every coach at a major job. Saban and Miles will say that they have the best staff in the country just as much as Stoops and Meyer, mainly because it sounds good and you can't really prove them wrong.
Butch also had criteria for his ideal staff (character, etc); is Jay Graham the best RB coach in the nation? I don't really know, but Butch must think he is.
You gotta believe he will be able to put together a heckuva staff, and I do. Not sure if it'll be THE best, but it should be one of the best. In the national eye, this seems like a solid hire at a great program that will spend a lot, and that should translate to one of the best coaching staffs.
    Just my thoughts

My take on Jones comments during his conference are posted elsewhere, but I think that statement he made about having the best staff in the country is best viewed in context with his other statements where he said he believed that his UC program was the best in college football and that he thought his season this year at UC was "the story of the year in college football"..

I know he has to have words that dazzle us fans, but let's not kid ourselves and say that he doesn't know what's at stake here. He just watched Derek Dooley burn to ashes in this program...he has to see that assistants are everything in this business.

I do disagree with that last statement though. I think there's plenty of time to make a splash in recruiting. I mean CBJ sweet talked us at the press conference imagine what those words sound like to a 17 or 18 year old. Just my opinion though.

  • For me, and apparently i might be alone on this, i'd rather you not try and dazzle me with hyperbole during the presser. Energy and passion are fine, exageration and bluster not so much. Especially when there is no reason for it. The man has a fine record, he doesnt need to overstate it. And dont promise things you cant deliver. Dont tell me you will turn over every stone to bring in the finest staff in the country if you are going to import most of the staff that you had at UC and CMU. No one believes that staff was the best in the country, and the fans here wont either. So best you try and phrase that statement differently lest you start people questioning your judgment or, worse, your integrity.

  • Yes, we shredded their defense last year, but their defense isn't horrible.
This year they are ranked in the Top 40 in almost all defensive categories, including total defense. They were also #12 in scoring defense.
Before you say, "yeah, but they play in a weak conference," yes, they do, but they also play against similar teams with similar talent. This means that they can coach their players to play well against similar talent. That translates to any conference with any talent level.
Dooley's problem was that he couldn't coach up a team at any level. That translated too, it was a failure.
CBJ has won at every level because he is obviously a good coach. He has been able to take the talent that he has on the team and make them the best in the conference.

No they Are not because this recruiting class is extremly important. You can't just take a year off in recruiting in the SEC! I hope he realizes this. CDD came in in his first year and closed with a top 10 recruiting class! CBJ better get his head on straight here!
