So, I'm in the military, and rarely in or around Knoxville these days. As a result, I keep up with the Vols through a combination of pay sites such as this one, free sites like KNS, and social media (mainly twitter). I know that twitter is the knee-jerk reaction capital of the world and all, but I can't help but notice how negative so many people seem to be on there. It's not just other fans that I see, but a lot of media personalities. Is the overall feeling in Knoxville one of gloom and doom or is it just a very outspoken minority?
The way I've seen things over the past year is this (and I don't expect everyone to agree): The football team this last year pretty much performed how I expected with the obvious exception of the Kentucky game. Granted, I would've liked to have pulled out a big upset this year, but we pretty much did what we should have by my estimation, again with the exception of Kentucky. As far as the basketball program goes, it's been about what I expected again. We've got a lot of guys who are inexperienced to begin with and are trying to learn a new system that their skill set may or may not be best suited for. It's frustrating, I get that, I guess I just don't see being super negative doing anything to help bring either program back to prominence. If we want Tennessee to be elite again sooner rather than later, wouldn't the best way be to show these kids that if they come here they will have unconditional support from the most loyal fan base in the country? I know I'd wanna go play at a place like that. Thanks!
Oh, btw, none of that is directed at these boards, so far I've found the people on here to be largely realistic and down to earth. Just wanted to get opinions from people closer to where it's all happening.

First thanks for what you do!
I'm not in Knoxville anymore but there has been a lot of doom and gloom by the media. I also follow a number of sites and all I can say is if you pay attention to who is doing the writing in time you'll learn they are always doom and gloom. As for me I come here for all of my updates and UT news and I also like Volnation but the rest is pretty much knee jerk reaction to everything.

It's not just the media. There is plenty of gloom and doom in the fanbase. Of course, most of them do nothing but look at the win and loss record and don't consider anything else about the program, like where it had fallen to and what has happened since the head coaching caravan ended.
shtooo's approach is the perspective of the rational, informed fan who understands the sport and its cyclical nature. Sadly, that is increasingly rare these days.
