The timing of "The Decision" to retain or fire Dooley

  • Lets say we go 3-0 in the last 3 games. That puts us at 7-5 for the year and maybe on a high note with a bowl game to look forward to. So here is the tough decision facing Hart if he allows Dooley to keep coaching there is a chance we come out and lay an egg in the bowl game and finish the year 7-6, and to me it is then too late to fire Dooley for recruiting purposes. At 7-6 for the year nobody I mean nobody is going to be excited about next year's prospects.

There is just no way Hart can take the chance that scenario plays out. IMHO this makes Hart's decision after the UK a much easier one and why it was imperative that Dooley win one in October.

To me a 7-6 year is not showing improvement over a 5-7 year with the 2 year record being 12-13.

  • If Dooley is fired it will be after the Kentucky game, unless we lose these next 2 in a row he will more then likely get fired that day because the Kentucky game would then be meaningless. But even if we lose the bowl game, it's to late to fire him, unless the bowl game we play in is like December 20th.

  • If he keeps Dooley, no matter if final record, no one will be excited about next year. Will be even less season tickets sold than this year. I just don't see a scenario where he stays. Crowd yesterday will continue and they will lose even more money.

That was my point there is no way Hart can allow that to happen if we end up winning the last 3.

Agreed. I've been saying it for 2 weeks. The bowl will not matter.

  • The decision has to be made after the last regular season game whether or not UT ends up in a bowl game. The new coach needs time to save face with current commits as well as some time to go get his own guys. If the decision comes after the bowl game, the new HC would have a month and it could get rough. If Dooley is fired, it needs to be made early so he has a chance to build towards the future since that's what a coaching replacement is for, the future.

  • I agree. I think he will be let go after the KY game. I personally think that the decision has already been made privately.

Even if we were to win out at 8-5, we would still be looking at crowds of 70,000 to 80,000 at best and that won't getit done. I'm sure Hart is doing his homework, and I hope that something is done after the BOT meeting, whether it is made public then, or not announced until after the KY game.

  • I kinda think Hart told Dooley after the SC game that he wouldn't be retained...

No chance. Why would he do that. What motivation would Dooley then have to recruit or even prep for any game the rest of the year.

I agree 100%. Especially after Bray, C.P., and Hunter are gone.

An argument could be made by the 3 offers extended this week that Dooley has done exactly that.

  • UT has never been good at timing these things.

This is the point I have been making. The record is secondary to how the team is playing and, equally important, the fan reaction to Dooley. I'm a season ticket holder who has already made the decision not to renew as long as Dooley is the coach. I'm not alone.

No, you're definitely not alone. In fact, I would say somewhere in the neighborhood of 10k other people will voice their displeasure with him as well, if he is retained.

  • Tennessee needs to follow KYs lead and hold a press conference tomorrow stating that CDD will coach out the year but he is not being retained. That allows Hart, not the boosters, to engage potential candidates immediately. This also might facilitate naming a new coach shortly after KY game to maximize each week between that game and national signing day.

Hart/Cheek have no choice but to make a change. Been following the program for 40 years and I have NEVER seen the General's house as empty as yesterday and I have never seen apathy higher. Also, I think making a change is now a consensus decision, or as close as one can be.

Govols2011, honestly,mi thought the same thing about the 2star offers last week. CDD knows his fate and is proving a point.

I believe Hart and Cheek are silent for a reason. The longer they are silent, the more the apathy builds against Dooley. It's a dangerous game though as it could backfire in season ticket renewals ...

I see the possibilities of what you are saying but what if he wins out and wins a bowl game. He is 8-5 and suddenly Von Bell, Toby Johnson, Derrick Green and other top recruits commit to UT and he has a top 10 or even top 15 recruiting class. Fans are fickle, you and I included, the excitement level would be back...at least for the first few games. My point is this is not an absolute situation...but close.

  • If Dooley stays for 2013, the only reason I would renew my season tickets is because I could upgrade my seats and get to a better spot. High back chair and view of the jumbotron here I come!

You can tell by the offers extended last week none of the players you mentioned are coming to play for Dooley and he already knows it. Next year we start out with road games at Florida and Oregon, so there goes any excitement that the fans might have.
