The truth about Bell

  • Since the announcement, one thing has become abbundantly clear to me. People are not necesarrily mad about losing out on a great safety. Most people are actually more angered at the fact that we didnt see a UT hat on a top recruit's head today. The hurt I feel really comes from missing out on national exposure for our university. And rightfully so. But losing Bell is not the end of the world. We got some good kids today.

Not to mention, Kelly Jr. should be signing with us next year and who's to say he won't be better than Bell. That could possibly wipe this loss off the board. I still hold out hope for McNeil as well. I think he's going to be a stud. Hope is not lost because of one player. Especially a player that can be replaced next year. Keep your heads up.

  • I think what hurt the most about Bell is the fact that he grew up a Tennessee fan. At least that's what hurt me the most. It makes you think, "man we can't even get a 5-star that has been a UT fan his entire life". But he did what he thought was best for his career. Butch still has a lot to prove before 5-stars start heading to Knoxville

    Butch, please!

  • As an outsider looking in:

1st let me say definitely keep you chins up. You have a fantastic football program located in one of my favorite areas in the country! You have a very very rich tradition and history.....and still are one of the nations top programs. I have much respect for you guys....

As you can tell by my name...I'm both a Bearcat and a Buckeye....being a Buckeye 1st as that's how I was raised....my dad and I attended both schools. Just a little bit of history there.....

The one thing I think that was a bad move by your administration was the way in which Phillip Fulmer was handled....just really really bad IMO. I'm sure there's much that I don't know about or am fully aware of.....there's not a coach out there that doesn't deal with some bad apples on the team who bring a negative light on the program. Not one.

But I can tell you this......the worst thing that probably hurt your program more than anything was hiring Lane Kiffin. I'm sure you all agree with that statement......I mean all you have to do is look at his resume and it doesn't lie. He has got to be the greatest snake oil salesman ever....I don't know how he promotes himself like that considering he's actually done NOTHING substantial his entire coaching career.

Don't know much about Dooley.....but looking at his resume....other than being a much better person than Lane Kiffin.....IMO he doesn't have the resume to take on a program of you stature.

    Butch Jones:
I was so damn pi$$ed that we lost him to you guys. Very very disappointed....because when I was attending U.C. weeds were growing out of the stadium bleachers....and if you didn't want to get hemroids you had to bring your own seat cushion or take your chance getting piles sitting on concrete slabs!! The program has done a complete 180 since I went there....that being said...

Of your past 3 coaches.....I feel Jones is going to settle in their and turn things around. If he can have 3-4 years....you'll be back to the apex of the SEC east. He's a much more proven coach than both Dooley and Kiffin combined IMO. He's a winner....and likes the challenge of winning championships.

Jones can and will bring in the recruits....and some will be surprises at that! I could be going out on a limb here....I don't know. But my gut tells me Jones could be the real deal for you guys. Winning will take care of the rest.

From someone who has seen both of his favorite programs in the dumpster at times....believe me...you guys will rise to the top again.

    Hang in there.

I hear ya. Gotta win games before the 5*'s sign. They've usually already got $ signs in their eyes and wanting to win now to boost their draft possibilities.

  • Butch Jones:

"Jones returned to Central Michigan as head coach in 2007. In his first year he posted an 8–5 overall record and a 7–1 conference record. Jones ended two streaks that had haunted his predecessors. On September 29, 2007, CMU beat Northern Illinois University, which was the first CMU victory over Northern Illinois going back to 1998 (nine games). On November 6, 2007, CMU beat its chief rival, Western Michigan University, at its home field of Waldo Stadium for the first since 1993. He guided CMU to the MAC title at Ford Field in Detroit against Miami (Ohio), and led the team to its second consecutive Motor City Bowl. He was only the ninth football coach in Mid-American Conference history to win the championship in his first season. In 2008, a 31–24 loss to Ball State on Nov. 19 derailed the Chippewas' MAC title hopes, but CMU earned a trip to a third consecutive Motor City Bowl. In 2009 he guided the Chippewas to their third MAC Championship in four years after an 8–0 MAC schedule, the first time in school history the Chippewas went undefeated in the MAC. CMU completed its run with a 20–10 win against Ohio in the MAC title game at Ford Field. He left CMU with a 27–13 overall record and 20–3 MAC record. He did not win a bowl game, though his team won the 2009 bowl game against Troy, 44–41."

If I were a Vols fan....this would really have me feeling good about this coach. I watched him keep U.C. from falling back in to the sewer after Brian Kelly left. I read that right there and that alone....tells me he's way way better than both Dooley and Kiffin.

It may or may not work....but I sure as hell think it can. Jim Tressel wasn't a big name coach....but he was a proven winner. I think Jones is too.....he's got that championship pedigree that Dooley and Kiffin didn't have.

To play in the SEC, (Mr. Bell had an offer from Bama and was recruited hard by them as well), and especially to play at Tennessee these days, it requires not only great ability but also that individuals have STOUT HEARTS, FORTITUDE and GRIT !!

Maybe... Mr. Bell was found a little bit lacking in a couple of these traits this AM...just maybe....

Lets greet with open arms and give a big WELCOME to those who decided today to take the more difficult path and take on a challenge and try and accomplish something that nobody is giving them a chance to do.

Let us embrace the COURAGE that was displayed today!!

    That is all...

Thanks for the analysis Bearbuck. I agree...hiring Kiffin set our program back at least 5 years. Good luck to OSU in 2013, and congrats on getting Vonn Bell. He's a stud, for sure. Oh and one more thing, please beat Michigan for me next year...I hate the damn Wolverines...

Go Vols. Go Buckeyes. Muck Fichigan.

    +1

I'm not going to tie up your boards I promise....

But this is definitely a possibility and here's why I agree with you.....

It's not wonder why the SEC as a whole is king!

7 of the top 11 recruiting classes are SEC teams! That is unheard of. That will never happen to any other conference.....nor do I believe any other conference has ever accomplished that. None!!

I really do think Bell was torn on where he really wanted to end up......but damn....look at those numbers. The SEC as a whole is loaded! In today's society.....we created that gotta have it now attitude.....and these young men are caught up in that. More important to them than being a part of building something that could be great.....sometimes they cut the corners thinking the shorter road is better. As things currently stand....the B1G Ten is a shorter road than the SEC.

Looking at those numbers it's easy to see.....I think he honestly does have more of a chance to shine at tOSU due to that fact.

It is what it is and I'm not downplaying it....the B1G Ten is really the Big 2 and the rest.....that's it.

First...I do think he would thrive no matter where he took his talents. If he can carry that talent to the collegiate level...the kid is going to be an absolute stud! I've watched a lot of his film.....he can be that good! But you never know...

I've heard so many discussions amongst our boards that we are this and we are that.....like LB'er U or RB U blah blah...

But we certainly have a very rich history of some truly great defensive backs. I'm sure that combined with UFM's charisma and such had as much to do with it as anything.....

When Jones starts turning things around and winning....and let's face it...winning does wonders.....things are going go great for you guys.

The Kiffin hire, the Fulmer fire, the Dooley hire, its all traced back to one man " Mike Hamilton ", and i do think we will get back to the top, we will have to be patient with the Butcher, but i think he gets it done, hes already shown he will go for the bigtime recruits, and i do agree, its gonna take a little time, that will just make it that much more sweeter. Vonn Bell will be a distant memory when Todd Kelly is knockin heads for the Vols !
