  • I think we have a great staff, just want to make that clear from the get-go. Unfortunately, they've been dealt a tough hand. For the sake of this post, I'm just gonna look at things from this day forward. What led us to this point doesn't matter.

2013 - 6-6, maybe 7-5 if everything goes right. I think most would agree with that. We knew going into today that we have huge needs at CB, LB, and DE. None of those needs were met. Sure, we got Jaylen Miller. Horray. But he's not a pass rusher. We need a pass rusher. Carr, he's a DT. A pass rusher would have been huge, but between Smith, Williams, Lewis, Couch, McCullers, Hood, Walls, and Danny O; we'll be OK on the DL.

We are also OK at LB; I think between Sapp, Harris, and Vereen, we'll find a competent OLB.

CB on the other hand.. we're screwed. Nobody we have can cover, and without a dominant pass-rusher, this will be exposed. Combine this with Jancek's history and you have a nighmare on your hands. Nothing against Jancek.. don't get me wrong. I think he's a good DC and I like his scheme. He has had some of the best defenses in the Big East over the past few years.. What I'm talking about it HOW he's done it. His defenses usually get a lot of sacks and ints from rushing the passer, but generally give up tons of passing yards. What will his defense look like if they aren't able to get to the QB? I'm sure he's looked into ways he can minimize the damage, but he's got his hands full.

2014 - We are in a world of hurt. I'm thinking something like 4-8, keep in mind we travel to Oklahoma.

QB: Between Worley, Peterman, Fergie, and Dobbs - surely somebody can ball.
WR: We're fairly loaded - Pig, Croom, North, Jenkins, Bowles, Smith - but we lack depth
RB: Lane and Young should be an ok 1-2 but again, we lack depth
    OL: Ouch
    TE: Doesn't matter

    DE: Ouch
    DT: Ouch
LB: Ouch (AJ and Maggit could go pro)
    CB: Ouch
FS: Ouch (Randolph could go pro)

We apprear to be good at the skill positions on offense, but we all know that doesn't matter if your OL can't block.

So, how important is this 2014 signing class?

Who can we sign to help?

  • Yeah Oklahoma is going to be bad. I personally dont see 6-6 next year, most assuredly not 7-5. There are to many tough teams on the schedule and we are switching offensive and defensive schemes.

I think this is a good assessment but will have to be assessed again as the year goes on. Have to see who can step up and fill holes as needed.

  • I do see that Miller has a decent 20-yard shuttle; 4.76 ain't bad. For comparison purposes, Lawson is 4.87. Could explain why he was a tick slow in the All-American game. Eli Daniel is 4.55. Jason Hatcher is 4.06 explode and wth I just saw where he went to Kentucky??

  • With your positive attitude about the 2014 season maybe we should just give up football. We have another recruiting class before that season but I guess you already know we are in "a world of hurt". AJ, Maggit, and Randolph could go pro. The sky aint fallin yet my friend. We don't need no negative Nancy's. The world could end tommorrow and I'll be in a better place. See there is no need to worry about what might be. Let's win one football game at a time in 2013 first. Don't worry, Be Happy!!!!!

Please don't be mad at me. I can't take it. Just wondering who the board thinks we can sign in 2014 to fill our possible needs :(

    6-6.5 is a great over/ under for 2013.

2013 roster/season needs IMO were met as our biggest needs were getting a juco CB, juco TE, top WR (North and then an EE Paul Harris), and IMO EE HS safeties and we got 2 (JRM and L Johnson) to go with BR, BMoore and McNeil that have played (who knows on Brewer). We also got a beast LB as an EE in Vereen...that could rush at DE in sub packages.

Please remember only a very selct few players will really contribute their 1st year and those are the 2 jucos, North, many an EE safety, and maybe Vereen at LB a bit + 1-2 more. Usually you will only see 4-6 a year really play much other than STs

We got 2 pass rushers at DE......J Miller will play in 2014 a ton. M Brown might be more of a project for 1-2 years and RS.

As for CB: Oliver, Gray, Coleman, juco EE R. Jones should be able to get it done with a simpler 4-3 and better coaching + the key being much better safety play which the 4-3 will really help them play faster.

As for 2014 I think we are still looking at 6 wins as the over/under. IF we can get to a bowl game both years that is a job well done. We still should have won 6 games at least in 2011 and 2012 and we had a brutal schedule then too.

Needs for the 2014 class is no doubt: DE, DT, OT, LB and RB........its not even close. It is very important because it will define IMO the success and failure of Jones. Go look at coaches in their 2nd year this year and the 2nd class they landed this year and you will see how key it is.

The program is still way way better than it was in Dec 2009. We just need to win to get those 4-6 key needs filled guys that make an ok/good class a great class. Next year look for them to be TKjr and Hurd and big uglies incl LBs.

    GBO!

Just read about Florida's recruiting class, OL, DL, and WR. Next year, we need that type of class out of OL and DL, a bunch of 4 and 5 star players. I think we will be okay with both lines next year, 2014 is a guess right now. We don't have any depth on the roster now for 2014.
