This years staff vs. the previous staff of 2 years.

  • I was thinking about the positions on this team that have disappointed and overachieved to this point in the season. Fair or not, the position coaches get most of the praise or blame.

QB- (This year)Chaney vs. (previous) Hinshaw.....Bray development is still not what it should be mentally. To me, he's not really regressed, but he's not showed a lot of progress either. This position change is a push.

RB-(this year) Graham vs. (previous) Grad asst. No brainer this position has improved night and day with Graham.

WR (this year) Hinshaw vs (previous) Baggett. Hunter has under performed in my eyes to this point, and we are still talking route running for CP this late in the season. ZRogers is the most improved player on the team though. I give the edge to Baggett on this one.

OL (this year) Pittman vs (previous) Heinstand. No brainer, Pittman has really developed this group to another level.

DL (this year) Palermo vs (previous) LThompson/Chuck Smith. Malik was really good last year and McCullers, Sentimore and others have showed glimpses this year. Neither unit has been consistent though. This change is a push IMO

LB (this year) Sunseri vs (previous) Sirmon/LT. This may by default because of the change in defense, but LBs have realllllllly struggled this year. Slight edge to Sirmon.

DBs (this year) Ansley/Conklin vs Joseph..DBs have struggled all 3 years of Dooley's tenure. This is a push IMO

Special teams/TEs (this year) Coiner vs (previous) Russell...TE's under Russell were better and special teams coverages and returns are equal, except for the CP factor. Slight edge to Russell IMO

A lot of us thought this staff would be better. Slightly is is recruiting wise, but performance? Thoughts?

  • I think this staff can still turn this ship around- It all starts with winning big in these final four games- any slip ups and all bets are off.
Desperately need something to build on.

I'm not saying they can't. I was just thinking out loud about all the position coach changes.

  • Interesting point. Just my two cents:

WR: Incomplete. Hunter is coming back from a major injury and I think the expectations may have been too high. The CP critique is fair but I don't know how many coaches can change that over 3 months.

Defense: I have no idea what is going on there so can't confidently comment on that. The unit is so much worse than last year, but is that scheme or poor coaching (just the loss of Wilcox or the new coaches being inferior).

Recruiting is tough to judge as well because the conditions around the program are worst than they have been since CDD arrived.

The injury to Hunter is a fair thing to point out. But him disappearing and dropping balls is not what a 1st round pick does. That is what concerns me.

  • I see what you are saying, I just think the thing to remember about Hunter is this was going to be his first year as 'the guy.' Freshman year he was an awesome deep threat, year 2 he got hurt earlier, so this is really his first year with a target on his back from good teams. I'm just not sure it is fair to blame coaching for that.

  • @bavw and Ryan

I guess the consistency is what I look at the most. The performance of the OL and RBs have been consistent. Were the expectations for Hunter too high? I can agree with that. But my point is that he's been inconsistent.

  • My only reply to this would be Hinshaw doesn't have the luxury of Da'Rick. I think if he's still on this team, our receiving corp looks a lot better as whole this year as far as performance and stats. You have to really appreciate what he's been able to do with ZRo though.

im going to say a bag of reasons on defense...key injurys and depth isnt where it should be yet..my 2 cents...huge huge ...Pittman got to stay to turn a offense around in his short time should speak volums

i still have faith in this coaching staff..last year we had no chance of beating ..georgia,southc.florida
this year we had a chance to beat all 3..and it slipped right away ..and i still say we have give bama there best test yet..drop drop..passes killed the results of that game.o forgot miss.st .my bad.but should see my point.

on another thread someone comparing the kentucky coaching team to us..can anyone say they had that chance with any of these teams NO..still say ride the ship out.go vols and keep the faith we are close and next year will prove that..its easy to say this could be a new team and coaches just in 1 year
just some point's to think about....go vols and win sat

We haven't beat any of those teams and we haven't out recruited them, do you hink we are going to out coach them? What makes you think anything is going to change? Just curious.
