Thought on Gruden....

  • Does anyone other than me, think it's interesting for him to at least come out and say he's not interested or not coming to coach, if there was obviously no chance of him coming??

  • Um... so did he or didn't he say something alluding to what you were speaking about?

    Tithulta

  • He would have to answer that question over and over. There are plenty of teams looking to hire him

  • Maybe Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy will bring him.

All I'm saying is that for a coach who is believed to be a pipe dream, there is nothing out there to say he isn't coming from his camp. You would figure he would come out and say no, if there weren't any truth to the rumors. Even Meyer did the same at OSU, even though he eventually accepted the job.

  • AtomicCity pegged it. He is being mentioned for a multitude of jobs. He almost always is being mentioned for jobs. Why waste time denying interest? Could be he likes being talked about.

He's been rumored to be going to the Browns, UT, Arky, Auburn, SC, Texas, and several others. Does he have to deny all of them every time one comes up?

  • This is true. Gruden always loved being talked about, and still does. Still, according to some, he's already hired, so why not at least say that part is not true??

    Just speculating.

  • Should you say you're not interested in a job if you haven't been asked? Wouldn't that be incredibly presumptive and also arrogant?

Wes has reported here that there has been no coaching search. That should tell you all you need to know.

No reason to deny it when you can use it for leverage

I bet there were a bunch of smartass Bama people on their boards saying the same thing about Saban a few years ago. The fact is you don't know, and neither does anyone else, so why make such a blanket statement?

Gruden has already been quoted last time as saying he has no intention of sitting in a 17 year old's living room and telling them they are the greatest thing since sliced bread. He has also never given Any indication that he is interested in being head coach at UT or any other college program. He gets paid millions now for sitting around and Talking about football (without any of the pressure of coaching). There is absolutely No good reason to think that (A) he will return to coaching (B) if he returns to coaching, it will be at UT and (C) if he returns to coaching after such a long layoff, he will do well (I live in DC. Joe Gibbs - who is a far better coach than Gruden, sucked in his second pass with the Redskins) (D) and that he would take the UT job since the previous coach took over a program literally in ruins and was fired after only three years. Of course, there may be a one in a million chance he comes. But thinking that might make it probable is like on the movie dumb and dumber (name of movie - not directed at anyone here) when the hot redhead says there is a one in a million chance of her going out with Jim Carey - thinking "so you're telling me there's a chance!?!" It is unlikely in the extreme that Gruden comes to UT.

  • It is unlikely in the extreme Gruden comes to UT if we're only paying WAC coach money. Every pay writer in this town has said interest was there but the financial gap was too large. The onus is on UT AD to make sure that doesn't happen that time. If they do that and he still says no that's fine, but if they go out and hire another unproven coach for 2M a year they deserve exactly what they get, and so do we for allowing them to spend what the do on facilities and rake in 100M on revenue and then spend 2% of that on the damn football coach. It's an utterly ridiculous proposition.

Even if you pay Gruden $5 million per year, he can get same or more in the NFL where it is much easier to rebuild with free agency, etc. jut being able to fifer NFL key does not mean someone who is already making nearly that much cash talking about football would pick UT over an NFL team offering similar $$$.
