best post that I have seen...thanks GhostofNeyland!!!
I completely agree. in particular, I think the issue is that fans are rightly angry about how the search proceeded. This easily (and wrongly) translates to an assumption that the hire won't pan out.
There's no question that Butch Jones is at least a decent coach. Some might argue that most of the coaches in Tennessee have been no better than decent, and yet we've had plenty of success.
Ultimately, only playing games will determine whether we've hired the right coach. If people want to be angry about the search itself, that's more than fair. Just don't confuse the search with the hire.
BUTCH IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. GO VOLS!
Thanks Ghost great article, I to think it should be required reading for all vol fans. I was appaled and ashamed of some of my so-called vol fans for their messages directed at our new coach. Did they not see the three fine boys and wife on the press. How do you think they feel moving from their home, which is always hard on the children, to start to school and hear the remarks that they repeat from hearing their parents. A coach needs the support of his family, and how can they give it with a hostile enviorment. I will support him as long as he is our coach and conducts himself in a honorable way. Thanks for the article. Just disappointed at the conduct of some of our fans.
Appreciate it guys
Ghost, I scanned over the story yesterday and then came back today to re-read it. Excellent story and I agree with you 100%! +1
"Old School"! A strong defense wins championships!
Great article. I personally think Butch Jones is a good hire, I'd rather have him than Charlie Strong based on length of experience, record, record against one another, and recruiting class rankings. He stacks up better than Strong in every way, except the lack of SEC experience. Yet, this fan base seemed to be united behind Strong, a man who did not want to be a Tennessee Volunteer. Jones is happy to be here, sees Tennessee as a place he wants to be. We should be glad to have him and do what we can as fans to help him be successful. I am deeply ashamed of the way our fans have reacted to this hire. Three years from now, if he isn't building a winning team, then we should be against him. He hasn't even coached his first game, and half our fanbase already has him fired. It is no wonder that the elite coaches want no part of this job.
Still not sold, unless he has a 8-9 win season next year, don't count on me changing my mind (like any of you care anyway). So in my best Bain from Batman voice I can muster "Let the down votes begin!"

Just excellent. I had planned to write a post today, when I had time, that expressed many of the same opinions, but now I'll just have more free time. Good stuff.
