Thoughts on Tenn basketball from a poster who knows....

  • This is from another site. A poster who is a former college player, now an attorney and sports agent. I know this guy and he knows what he's talking about. If the truth upsets you, don't read this post.

    _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Here's the deal, I love the Vols and I love basketball. I played basketball for four years at UT-Chattanooga, but my heart was always in Knoxville. I would probably even trade my 1997 NCAA Sweet Sixteen ring to have been able to play for four years at UT. So I come to this thread from a position of: A) Loving the Big Orange, and B) Knowing what the f*ck I'm talking about.

Over the past few weeks, I've made several border-line inappropriate comments about the coaching and the players out of frustration. Now that I'm calmed down after watching the utterly unwatchable again last night, I want to address some of the threads like the one started by PGoo earlier today, that seem to treat any displeasure with the state of the basketball team as either unpat(VOLS)riotic or an insult to "intelligent" fans such as him

Here's the deal: Martin is in over his head. His team stinks and his coaching stinks, and I don't have to like it. In fact, as someone who would like to see this program move forward from where Pearl left it, it pisses me off.

Nothing that we do on offense works. Our players seem to have no concept of spacing, screening, waiting on screens, etc. On top of that, I'm convinced that there is not a single good ball-handler on the entire team. Trae Golden may play hard and be a hell of a nice guy, but he is a below-average high-major point guard, and people act like the only reason we've lost the past two games is because he's been hurt. Richardson, McBee, Moore, and McRae are completely incapable of managing a game and getting a team in an offense, and Golden is only minutely better. I have lost count of how many times our guards, when pressured, simply resort to turning their backs to the basket from thirty feet out in order to protect the ball. None of them have any change of pace with their ball handling, so they rarely create any separation from the man guarding them. And God forbid that one of them actually have to go somewhere with their left hand because that is a MF'n turnover. If you have no good guards, you cannot do anything offensively -- which we can't

Dude needs to stop licking his fingers and get a clue. There is more to being a successful coach than teaching decent half-court man-to-man defense, which is the only thing he does well.

  • OMG..i dont mind your posts. In fact, i respect the passion. I love my UT hoops. I was a UT basketball fan before football actually. So im not thrilled with this season either. But, what's the solution at this point? Fire CM? I just dont see any good coming from that at this moment.. Who would replace him? It's not like coaches are knocking down the door to come here, as evidenced by our last search. Im not sold on CM, but i guess im not where you are..yet..

I think you have to give CM a chance to coach next year's team with his full compliment of players before a true final judgment can be passed. Not saying anything in that post you pasted are not accurate..just, i really think it's still premature.

  • I hate to even say it, but I'm with OMGJG on this one. This situation is deplorable. Did you watch last night's game? No passion. No energy. Not aggressive on either end of the court. Sloppy, loose, and lifeless. This is not the first time, and it's not an isolated situation this season. This is EVERY game, barring one or two.

Good coaching attracts good players and coaches them to be their best. Can any of you say Jarnell Stokes is significantly better than he was fresh out of high school last season?

Does this team give you any impression that they'll win ANY game before they hit the floor?

At least with Pearl, we always thought we could take on anyone and have a chance... Right now, I don't ever have that feeling, regardless of who we play.

I'm willing to hang through next season, with the full compliment and the newcomers...but my fear is it won't look much different then here we'll be with the basketball version of the CDD situation all over again. We were at too good a place to be "rebuilding"... Just doesn't seem right.

  • Look does omg make good points yes but those points were made weeks ago and why I do agree that this team looks non coached and under prepared it also isn't time to start looking for a coach yet. A lot of people on here were spoiled by Pearl and even Pearls offenses were not very impressive to watch at times but they did show effort which a lit of the times does not show at tines either.

With that said my whole thing is this anybody who has ever played basketball can see the issues we don't need it repeated to us twice a week and we def don't need someone who played the lort from another board reinforcing it after it'd been crammed down our throat

  • What Cuanzo is doing ain't working. You can play great defense but if you can't score your doomed. I can see why stokes is pissed, he has to get his points off offensive rebounds and they should have designed plays to get him the ball without double teams. Don't know about y'all but I like defense but watching a b ball game that barely produces 100pt between two teams is not fun to watch.

    dirtyred

  • Lately the defense has been poor. The offense has been poor all season, turnovers are killing us. I'm not sure this is headed in the right direction. I'm also not sure what to do. Like frosty, I think a new coach would be premature but the team just plays ugly ball and they are losing.

    coonhound

  • If Martin had a true point guard, I don't think we'd be having this discussion. That said, I will say that if he doesn't get one and get him on the floor next year, I'll be for replacing him.

Concur. I think it was Drizz who said on a thread yesterday, just dont watch the games if you are going to repeat the same criticisms game after game, cause a legit SEC PG is not walking through that door any time this season, neither is another scorer or any more ball handlers. So it is what it is this year. What OMG is saying can likely be said after every game for the rest of the year. So, we either choose to watch and cheer on the Vols understanding the product is not what we want it to be..but we watch because it's Tennessee and that's our team, for better or worse. Or, if it's too painful, just dont, and tune in next year when hopefully we have a team that can be successful. If that doesnt happen, i dont know too many people on this board who wont think that CM had a fair shot, and he just couldnt get it done.

  • As someone who played basketball for 10 years, as sad as it is, this guy is right. I'm not saying CCM should be fired...not at all. It is waaaaay to early to be calling for his head. But something has to change. Either Cuonzo needs to have a clinic on ball-handling and screening or he needs to scour the nation in search of a true point guard; of course, now that I think about it, he probably needs to do both. This summer needs to be spent on ball-handling, offensive sets, and shooting. Defense is only half the game, and Cuonzo needs to realize that. He's a good man and the players love him, I still support him, but he's got to make some kind of change. Perhaps hire a new assistant coach that specializes in offense? I don't know, but something has to give.

Does Mr. Conner know you're quoting him? I can always ask him myself since both he & his brother were at UTC the same time I was. As a matter of fact, their locker room was right across from mine & I know him pretty good as well as some of your "teammates" you said were on your Tennessee Travelers team back in the day....

I'm with you ATC, he's a broken record, he's already canceled his membership and frankly we don't anymore negativity in Vol nation!! If you hate CCM so bad then burn all of your orange, find you team that's "winning", jump on the bandwagon with the rest of the ney sayers and for Pete sake, just be on your merry way. One thing for sure though, when (and believe me it is when not if) CCM turns the corner with the Vols then NOT ONE TIME do I, or any of the other true Vol fans, want to hear you talk about a great Vol Bball team! As much as I loved Bruce he didn't leave CCM with greatest of talent and for that to be seen then he's gonna need more than 1&1/2 seasons. I mean c'mon he's not even coaching his players yet!

  • This team is brutal to watch. That's for sure. If we don't drastically improve next year with Maymon, Stokes, and Hubbs, then it's time for Bruce Pearl's triumphant return. Maybe that's why BP hasn't moved yet. Just biding his time to see what happens.

  • I will start this reply as stating that I am a VOL fan through and through. Football, Basketball (M&W), baseball, etc. I was also a HUGE Bruce Pearl Fan and was shattered when he was dismissed after all that had been done in order to keep him. That being said when Cuonzo was hired I was skeptical but I looked at his past as a player and as a coach and thought he would do a fine job. A different philosophy than what we were accustom to but a fine job nonetheless.

This season is just plain BAD, there is no other way to define it without using expletives. There is a lack of player leadership on the court and it shows each and every game. When Pearl was the coach we would have a different guy step up every game and with this team it will either be one of three players. Jarnell has put up a double, double 6 out of 7 games and is playing much better that he started the season but that does not replace the lack of a solid PG.

I do believe next season will be better with Maymon back on the floor. The inside should be locked up with both Maymon and Stokes in the paint. However we will still be missing a prolific PG and the only one that can fix that is CM.

I just hope he really gets on the recruiting trail and lands one, a very good one at that.
