Timeline for a New Coach...

  • The timeline for hiring a new coach is very important. If you're going to fire Dooley you HAVE to do it the Monday after South Carolina. 3/4 of the posters here could coach this team to a 4-0 record in November, so I think we all expect to win those 4 games and winning those wouldn't change anybody's opinion of Dooley...

If we wait to fire Dooley at the end of the year, odds are we won't have a new coach n here until January, and that's not enough time IMO to save this recruiting class, and pursue other top players. If Dooley get's fired after South Carolina, Hinshaw can run the team in November, and it will give Hart a good 4-6 weeks to find a replacement, leaving 6 weeks to recruit.

Hell, if we win 1 of these next 2 games this post is irrelevant, we win 8 games, Dooley stays, and we finish the year on a high note. Let's hope that happens, but if it doesn't, this is how I'd like things to transpire.

  • This is it exactly. If losses like last night and 7-5 records (assuming we don't have another Kentucky-type explosion in November) lose us players like Vonn Bell, Dooley needs to go.

The roster on offense looks much worse next year and I don't see how you can foresee more than 7 wins at this point. Unlike this year, we have a guaranteed loss traveling to Eugene out of the conference.

We cannot compete for the SEC East title with a bunch of lesser recruiting classes when we OBVIOUSLY don't have the coaching to make up the gap in talent. And keeping Dooley for another 7-5/8-4 season does nothing.

Barring a miracle against 'Bama or USCe, I think Dooley has to go.

  • driz, how can UT fire Dooley without already having a "silent commit" from a coach that can bring the excitement back to Big Orange football? I am still hanging on to the Dooley bandwagon by a thin thread, but the Dool-Aid is beginning to taste a little sour. However, this team has exhibited a few glimpses of "what could be" and may yet pull a surprise. For Dooley's and the program's sake, I certainly hope so.

If the Vols continue to fail, I can see the need for a coaching change, especially if we lose to a Vandy or Mizzou. But unless there is a splash hire that can generate immediate hope and enthusiasm, we may be cutting off our nose to spite our face.

"Old School"! A strong defense wins championships!

  • I've always felt like a coach should be fired as soon as the boss makes his decision to go a different direction. I think an upset loss is more likely if the writing is on the wall but a change hasn't been made.

  • No way you fire him unless you have another in the pocket. No search this time- can stand to be told no. BTW I believe Dooley will coach next year.

  • I'm sure Kirby Smart and Dave Hart will talk soon if they haven't already and I would consider that a splash hire. I don't mind him not having HC experience, look at what Jimbo Fisher and Will Muschamp have been able to do. There would be very little, if any, scheme change on defense and with the talent we have in the front 7 and at safety, I think a defensive hire gives us our best chance to win early which is essential. He's a great recruiter. He knows recruiting in the south. And he's affordable.

Kirby is holding out for our job or UGA. He will stay with Saban until one of them opens up.

Again, I'd rather have a guy who was a lights out coordinator than someone who never coordinated either side and had a mediocre record as a head coach, but I realize the hiring situation the AD was in last time.

This time...it's unfortunate...but the limiting factor will be money.

  • How do I find myself agreeing with you so much more often as of late, Drizz? Have you become more reasonable or have I?! :-)

    Yeah I think you're right.

We are close to having a USC/Florida caliber defense.. All we need are CBs, familiarity with the system, and another great defensive mind on that side of the ball. Sunseri is good but he could use some help. I think Smart and Sunseri could have UT playing championship defense very soon especially if they could convince Ramsey and Alexander to sign with UT
