Today is a great day

  • For me, it officially marks the end of the Dooley era. Jones will have a pretty good team coming back if they can coach which by all indications they certainly can. The 2014 class will have a full year to get to know Jones and see what kind of coach he is. By all indications from a bunch of media outlets, the players/recruits like Jones and his coaches. There was just to many bridges burned before he got here.

I will not judge him by this class. That comes one year from today. However, I expect to see an improvement on the field. Surely this staff can get the right people out there for the punt team. banghead

    Great post.

Although we said the same thing about Dooley's first NSD.

  • When the season starts I will but a 100% supporter of Butch, that is just the type of fan I am.

But I don't understand how you give him a pass on this recruiting class. Whatever the results are today, they reflect his ability to close and retain recruits in the last few months of recruiting. It isn't going to get easier for him going forward. This year he could sell hope and coming in as one of his guys, next year that pitch will be weaker and he will have to defend his record at UT.

Not to be a downer, and maybe I am overly cautious after having so much faith in Dooley coming into the year, but I don't get the blind optimism that Butch is a great recruiter/closer and things will turn around next year.

    Good points.
We're all a bit cautious after being burned so many times. Maybe he's not a great recruiter. But if he can come out this coming season and win some games, then he won't have to be a great recruiter. Kids want to come to UT, but they're hesitant because of our recent past. If we won 8 games or maybe even 7 last year, then Bell would be a Vol. If Butch can win a game or two that we aren't suppose to win, then we will be fine. We need to give recruits a reason to believe in us again.

  • Did Butch lose any top recruits we were on? He is our 4th coach in the past ten years, I personally don't blame recruits for having their doubts. Once recruits see his product on the field and hopefully a fanbase that buys into it, then the recruits will come.

I agree, the record next year is incedibly important and I do not mean to suggest he was coming into an easy situation at all.

I just disagree that there is nothing we can learn from the results today about Butch's ability to recruit and close.

  • I don't understand how people believe he isn't a good recruiter? He comes in here and has 2 months to recruit. Goes after some of the top guys in this class, mind you, that Fooley didn't even think about because he thought they were above TN. He got darn close on a number of them. That's a job well done in my opinion seeing how the other teams have had at least a year to recruit these kids.
I said when Fooley was hired it was a mistake. He had a losing record at LA Tech and was a panic hire. The only thing he did for our program was get us in better discipline shape than what Kiffin left us in.
Coach Jones is a proven winner at every school he's been to. He WANTS to be here. He LOVES Tennessee. And he has a passion for this place that I haven't seen since Fulmer. He needs to get what he can this class and just get ready for spring. He needs to have an Ole Miss type season, win a bowl game, and then we will get these big time recruits to come. People take the easy way out this day in age. They want to go to the bling, to the tv deals, to the WINS!!! Win, and this problem will be solved.

I have Coach Jones back! I believe and will be with him to the end. Go Vols!

LOL....Great post! +1.....I am not discouraged, shaken a bit yes, but not let down. My cup may be half full, but there is still plenty to drink, and I am not gonna go thirsty. We have some great talent coming in, some already here, and a new era to be excited about. I really do hope all the naysayers and doubters can put on their big boy panties and rally around this staff and team unlike ever before. Give em' some love for their hard work, and dedication. I see great improvements on the horizon, and that is just the start of the great things to come! GBO
