I'll take a shot...
Mental Toughness and Resilience of the team. We never came back in games under Doolander. When we were down we were out. We were the worst 2nd half team I've ever seen over Doolanders tenure. (I'd love to see 2nd Half scoring over Doolanders tenure) No adjustments and we rolled over when things got hard. I want to see Butch's teams fight, and play a full 4 quarters against Good teams. That's it for me. We are going to be bad next year. There is not a lot of talent on this team outside our O-line. 6 Wins would be a huge accomplishment.
I hope we can get fundamentally sound and never give up or pout when things aren't going our way.
+1 It's a good idea.
My hope is that the CBJ early years return the competitive spirit to the power T brand. That would be reflected in 95,000+ attendance for each home game with each game's outcome in doubt midway thru the 4th quarter. This would be a consistent competitive standard. No more half empty Neyland after two second half possessions.
Obviously we will need to win some of these. But I for one want to be able to stand and cheer myself hoarse and be proud of the product on the field even in losing games as we rebuild the product. I don't remember the year, 1980 perhaps, but the Vols under Coach Majors were rebuilding and played way over their heads in losing a close one to USCw. The fans gave the team a standing ovation after the game for their valiant effort even in defeat.
I hate losing as much as any one, but I detest watching a game when I feel our team has given up, and there is a big difference in the two. The fist in the air for the defense will be good if the players make it happen. I believe this coaching staff is going to be real fighters and exhibit a ton of sideline energy to get us back to winning.
Sorry if this is way too general or off base. It got me pretty fired up thinking about the upcoming season, so it served a good purpose.
I want to see some overachieving.......we grossly underachieved with Dooley. Talent wise, we should have been right in the middle of the SEC last year. If you add all the stars from each roster in the SEC last year we were right in the middle, and finished in the cellar. Conversely, CBJ's teams at Cinci, according to the stars, were middle of the pack, and he won a couple of league titles.......Hopefully he brought the overachieving with him...........Being a blind optimist at times, I am going with beating everyone we should, plus an upset, plus a bowl win.........GBO............yea, and I'm definitely with hdrizz on making some adjustments at the half..........
1) A winning mentality. I want to see a team go into the swamp and not play it safe. I want the team to play to win in all 4 quarters of the football game. Not just one brilliant half of keeping it close. I want to see teams fearing to come play at Neyland stadium again. It's been almost a decade or more since Tennessee was unbeatable at home.
2) I want to see a return to greatness in stopping the run. I think to be successful in this league... you got to be able to stop the run. Tennessee hasn't been good at that for a while.
3) better consistency in kicking and punting the ball.
I would like to see us continue to bring in the same high character kids we've been bringing in that care about the perception of the university and the team while continuing to build a culture where there's no off field incidents (with in reason, they are kids) graduation % continues to increase and actually defines what being a VFL means.
I guess I'll sound like a broken record but I have to say I want to see a team that's competitive, has fire in its belly and ultimately brings the swagger back to Tennessee.
There's no such thing as moral victories. But you know what? I'll take one. Or two. Or three. Of we lose to Bama by three then that's fine with me at this point. But I want to be right there on the edge of my seat screaming and ill take feeling the disappointment of a loss at the end of the game instead of feeling it halfway through the third quarter.
I want to see coaches that can coach and not lose games off asinine decisions and petty blunders.
1. Fundamental football, especially tackling
2. A team that improves throughout the season
3. Mental toughness. If we are down, I don't want us to fold like a cheap tent.
