Twitter Time in Tennessee

Butch Jones’ social-media stance is simple and to the point. Tennessee's new football coach and his staff are on board with the 21st century.

  • I have to agree. Selling the Tennessee brand is a good thing. I think there's a sweet spot somewhere in between kiffin's pathological need for attention and Dooley's near complete rejection of the media

If you look at what Jones and his staff have been posting on Twitter, it's been either tweets promoting the program or RTs from fans promoting the program. They aren't using it for self-promotion, and I think that's a crucial aspect of their approach.

I agree with both of the statements made here. CBJ and Staff are doing a great job IMO of finding the sweet spot of social media use.

I've been following them on twitter since day one. My post was entirely positive.

Coach Dooley is pretty old-school for his age. While I still admire and respect a lot of the old school ways, fact is that kids that are recruiting age right now and very in tune with social media. It is how they communicate with one another and with everyone else. Heck, the other day my neighbor tweeted to her teenage son to go make his bed, lol. It's just how they "roll", and coaches have to be in tune with that to resonate with them. I'm glad to see CBJ bring some energy back to UT.

  • Interesting read, there is one huge aspect to using twitter that wasn't mentioned. NCAA rules prohibit coaches from contacting recruits in many ways. They can't call or send text messages until Sept 1st of the recruits senior year. With all the early commits that's too late. After Sept 1st of a recruits junior year though they are allowed to use social media and send emails as well as snail mail. So while public comments to or about a recruit are prohibited, if a recruit and coach follow each other on twitter they are allowed to send direct messages. In today's society that's a good as text messaging. If a junior sends a text the coach can't answer, but if they send a direct message on twitter the coach can respond. This is huge, as recruits often now have Facebook and twitter private messages sent directly to their smartphones which essentially means you get a legal way to text a recruit. Coaches who didn't use this before were missing the boat with an easy way to build relationships with recruits.
