USC commitment ready to visit UT

Top247 wide receiver Eldridge Massington of Mesquite, Texas, has been committed to USC since May, but he says he will visit Tennessee's campus for the first time this week.

  • It's funny, I'm a UT graduate and I love the University, but I don't think the campus is all that beautiful. Yes, there are some pretty spots on campus such as Circle Park. And being on the Tennessee River/Lake Loudon gives it a certain feel not many campuses have. But realistically the campus is cramped with buildings because of limited space on the main campus.

I would encourage anyone to attend Tennessee because I had a wonderful educational experience there, but I've seen prettier campuses and some of those campuses are our biggest rivals.

I'm with you. A lot of surface lots and poorly aged '70s architecture.
But I think the mountains that can be seen from the drive up and campus being right on the river help the aesthetics.
Hopefully the master plan for the campus' layout and architecture will pay off in 20 years or so.

I'm a recent UT grad and while I agree, there is a lot of dated stuff, UT has done a great job updating the campus in a lot of aspects. Either way, I'm not sure how much an aesthetically pleasing campus is in the must-have list of top recruits. I'm sure it does help with a 'wow' factor at first, but I think UT's strong points once they get kids on campus are the actual athletic facilities. We have one of the best, if not the best, weight rooms in the entire country. The Neyland-Thompson Sports center is pretty drool worthy for an athlete. On top of that, we've got one of the biggest stadiums to play in just a block over. It's somewhat of a dream zone for athletes, and that's why it's great for us to get them on campus.

If his boy early gets a spot two i like our chances to flip

I agree with this; however, we've got to be careful about accepting additional 3* commits at this time. Many big time recruits are waiting to see how our season goes, so we want to have several spots remaining. We could offer if the kid really shows out during camp. I think the staff has somewhat put on the brakes until we get some games under our belt. That is wins under our belt.

  • Great to hear that Jason Hatcher and Jalen Ramsey are recruiting for us!

Now if they would just commit themselves...

Edit: Just saw news about Ramsey to USC. Dang! Although I suspected it.

  • Maybe we can flip Massington.

    ol dad

  • He will get a full glass of Kiffinhate. Pour it on. Although he probably get another ear full of Laylalove. Pour it on a little less.

  • There is no question in my mind that the Tennessee "pre-game" experience leading up to kick off, is much more impressive than Sou.Cal;. Tailgating, Vol Navy, Vol Walk, UT's Pride of the Southland Band's march to the stadium, pre game performance on the field, by the Pride and of course the Vols running through the T, can be second to none. If a youngster experiences all that, I believe he will be greatly impressed.

  • Our coaches, just as Pete did before, encourage our commits to go out there and experience the football culture across the country. Sure, you take a chance that a commit will flip..but then again, was he meant to be yours anyway?

These officials are never wasted, even if you think you have zero chance of landing a recruit, they will go back home talking up the program and encouraging other players to go out for a visit. That happened to us last season, a kid committed to Miami, but was tweeting all over the place to other fb players that they had to visit USC, and how awesome it was.

Good luck the rest of the way!

Lots of classy Trojan posters stopping by...thanks trojan1.

Agree on your post. Never a bad thing to get a guy to campus. Massington is a loooong shot, but glad he's checking us out.

I just want to add one thing...if our AD, alums/booster or anyone in authority at USC ever heard that our coaching staff was badmouthing another institution, or telling untruths to sway a recruit...there would be cries of outrage, and demands for immediate disciplinary action.

All that need be done, is a complaint to Pat Haden. It would not be tolerated, it is not the Trojan way.

  • Eldridge Massington tore his ACL, 4-6 months rehab.

USC is honoring his scholarship offer, per Eldridge.
