UT Students

  • I know it's thanksgiving weekend and all, so this game might not count, BUT what is the issue with student attendance? Is it just the non win situation, or something else....maybe $???

  • Cool weather, Thanksgiving break, poor season and early kickoff does not bode well for student attendance.

  • Most students don't come to Tennessee because they are lifelong, die-hard fans. Football games are a social event. When we are constantly losing, it's not fun.

    Just win games and this won't be a problem. They sold out the student allotment against Florida.

    It's Thanksgiving. If you're not from near Knoxville, why would you want to cut your Thanksgiving break short to come back for this game? I mean, it's a 4-7 team playing a 2-9 team. I get that it's your school and all, but if season-ticket holders are allowed to cut out on this game without any complaining, why is it a big deal when students don't show up?

    And yes, students do have to pay for tickets now, so that's definitely a factor, too.

  • Could it be that the higher GPA avg. Requirements have resulted in a different type of student body? You have more students who are focused on their studies and maybe not so much the extra curricular activities. I know that I probalby couldn't get in to school now, but 30 years ago I (and most of my friends) were in school having a great time and staying just focused enough to keep our GPA's up enough to get our degrees. Not saying that is always the case, but I do believe the average UT student is probably much more focused on their academics.

  • As a student, I think it's totally a winning thing. We were there full force for the Florida game. It was all anyone talked about that whole week. Win and the fans will come back just like always.

    JMO, but i don't think GPA has anything to do with it. Duke basketball, Stanford or Michigan football, being a good student or focusing on academics isn't what is keeping people away. The students not at the game are not at the library.

    What does the UT student pay for tickets? And how does that compare to other SEC schools?

    I don't remember exactly how much it is, but I think it's less than $20 per ticket. Perhaps some of the students who are on the board can weigh in on this.

    Every school in the SEC is different. UT didn't charge for student tickets while I was in school, but it does now. Some SEC teams charge for tickets. Some don't. But the majority now charge something for tickets, I believe. UT certainly was one of the few in the conference that didn't charge for tickets, when that was the case.

  • It's $10 per ticket for students. The price has nothing to do with going to the game or not for me. I can't speak for other students, however.

    I wouldn't say that. Money probably is an issue for some people, and it's not a big deal for others. It's never that cut and dry. But yes, if UT was winning more games, I'm sure there would be more students in the stands.

  • They also started charging for tickets in 2008 so that has probably compounded with the fact that the ticket cost and drop off in team performance happened the same season.

    I moved to Knoxville from Baltimore, MD for grad school - I've been a fan my whole life. I've been to every home game this season, and even bought a ticket for this game. But my parents were heading back north from Bean Station (Grainger Co.) this afternoon, and I'd have had to leave early this morning to get back into Knoxville for the game.

    Bottom line: it's a lot easier to deal with the terrible play and lack of effort when you've got a couch, a hot beverage, and three generations to join in disapproval of the underwhelming play.

  • As a lifelong Vol fan I've vowed to never miss a home game, but I think it's a combination of everything mentioned above. Also, I'd venture to guess that a lot of the younger Vol students didnt follow or didnt see the brand of football we fans were accustomed to in the 90's/00's

    I know at UGA, we can apply for tickets at the beginning at the season. You apply for tickets for each game you want and will get a certain amount of those tickets, for free, based off of your GPA and extra curricular involvement. For example, I am an Army ROTC cadet, a school tour guide and have a 3.4 GPA and got tickets to each home game but not the SECCG.
