Dual-threat quarterback John Franklin III of Plantation, Fla., a Florida State commitment, came away impressed following his official visit to Tennessee this weekend.

  • He sounds well spoken, I always like a recruit that has a good head on his shoulders. I can't say enough about the work the new staff has put in and the progress they've made. GBO!

  • Sounds like he made himself at home during his stay in Knoxville. It will probably be hard to beat out the homestate team but I think CBJ and Co. definitely gave him something to consider.

  • From his video, he's got solid pocket awareness, solid arm, and great speed. With no real major program outside of Florida State recruiting this kid, he could be a real steal. He seems really underrated.

  • I don't know if Franklin would walk in and start in any game his freshman season. I just don't think you can dismantle two quality QB's who have been in college already so easily. However, the QB position in the spread can really benefit from the "change of pace" approach sometimes used with RB's. This young man is definitely change of pace. Anywhere near 4.4 is a blazing fast QB. If he has an arm to go with it, wow.
I get the sense that we are still on the outside looking in on FSU, though. Hope I am surprised by him signing with us. Vols!!

  • South Plantation? Is he a teammate of Alex Collins, the APB we are also interested in signing? Would the commitment of one affect the other? I am not saying that they are a package deal, but does playing at the same college interest them? Haven't heard anything about Collins lately. Are we interested in signing him even if Green chooses UT? Questions, questions...Vols!!

  • I live about 200 miles from Tallahassee and have several friends and family members that attended and graduated from Florida State. There is no doubt FSU is a great school, but the city of Tallahassee can't touch Knoxville as far as the size of the town and opportunities within the community if the kid is looking for a metropolitan area to go to school.

I can drive through Tally on I-10 in about 10 minutes. It takes longer to get from the Watts Road exit in West Knoxville to the Weisgarber exit around Bearden than it does to get all the way through Tallahassee.

FSU has more recent history than we do, but up until 1948 it was still a girls school.

All that aside, I think the opportunity to compete for playing time early could be the thing that swings Franklin to Tennessee. Yes, I know we have two quarterbacks on the roster that have been in the program, Worley for two years, and that those guys will have spring practice to get a jump on the competition, but we used three quarterbacks in 2011 so there's no reason to think circumstances wouldn't allow us to use three or more quarterbacks this year.

Yes, they're teammates, but there doesn't appear to be much happening with Tennessee and Collins right now. They're interested in playing together in college, but I don't expect that to be a deal-breaker either way. Florida State doesn't appear to be much of a contender for Collins anymore, so it's not as if Franklin and Collins are planning to attend the same school right now.

Thanks Ryan. Too bad about Collins. His film is impressive. Would love to see him in orange.

You are really cranking out the work. Here's to hoping you get some rest after NSD!

  • I actually attended FSU for a couple of years 90-92. It's small but it is a fun college town.

And I agree that it does not stand up to Knoxville in terms of a metro feel. So, that question will come down to what that young man feels about the towns themselves.

But more than that, he sounds as if the depth chart is the deal-maker for him at either school. Don't know about the 'Noles right now, but on paper, we have two QB's with little and no experience. That screams OPPORTUNITY. Hope he hears it, cause his film looks great! Not a cannon, but accurate arm and blazing speed. Vols!!

As a current college student in Northern Indiana, and I know this is going to sound bad, but Tallahassee is an hour away from the beach and 2 hours from PCB. I think that more than makes up for it's lack of a metropolitan feel.

Either way, hope we land this guy. Would be fun to see him and Peterman work on earning a spot this spring. Reel em' in CBJ!

  • really love what i'm hearing from these recruits. they love the coaches, facilities and energy. like coach johnson said " if we get them on campus then we should sign them".

  • After reading this, I think he's a Vol. We (FSU) are recruiting him as an athlete. I don't see him getting the chance at QB here. The situation is much better in Knoxville.

One of the biggest attractions Tallahassee has for a young black male is the close proximity of Florida A&M and hundreds of bootilicious coeds. Never underestimate that feature. Unspoken outside of FSU but omnipresent

    hueypilot

  • Sounds like we are going to look like Oregon with the spread no huddle offense . A QB that runs 4.36 almost be tempting to move him to WR .

Wow, I had forgotten about that, but you are dead on. It truly is an omnipresent factor. I enjoyed it and I was not an athlete. Vols!!
