Uniform suggestion

  • I was watching Oregon last night and started thinking about how good an orange metallic helment would look with the power T on the back. I'd like to see us try something different to help generate some momentum. We have some of the most modern and cutting edge facilities on earth and yet we present ourselves on the field as a carryover from the 50's. Like it or not, how the team looks matters to kids these days and we need to keep up with the times. Cool and modern uniforms will catch kids eyes much like the checkerboard end zone has done. Oregon has done a fantastic job in marketing their "O" and color scheme as a brand. We should do the same with the "T" and orange and white. However, it won't happen by using the same packaging that we have used for 50 years.

Wow, please don't tell me you want to model TN uniforms off of what they are doing at Oregon!

  • Maryland started changing uniforms last couple of years. I don't think it has helped them that much. Oregon is directly involved with Nike. They have a good coach and facilities. These are the things that truly matter. Alabama, Florida, LSU, and the majority of the SEC get it. Uniform looks don't get you to the NFL. Coaching and facilities help with these more than uniforms.

No, I don't want to go all the way and do what Oregon is doing but I think we need a different, fresher look. There is still room for the traditional Tennessee uniform but also something more modern. After all, in the early 70's we didn't hesitate to adopt the protest jerseys (orange shoulders, white body) in response for being unable to wear our orange jerseys on the road when the home team wore colors also.

Like I said, I found the helmets so striking that I thought an orange colored one would be really cool. We could also do one in white that would work also. It also struck me how the project the yellow color and the "O". I actually thought their uniforms were kind of stale, particularly the jerseys.

Alabama is going to Nike Combat for the national championship game although the changes to their uniforms are pretty subtle.

  • Consider myself a traditional guy, fiscal and social conservative. But, I have to admit I liked the Black Jerseys. I have come to think that having a little fun maybe one game a season would not be a bad thing. Black Jersey was a significant leap, the suggested Orange/chrome helmet would be pretty extreme.

The helmet photo illustrated below is pretty sedate by comparison and IMO needs to be paired with a checkerboard stripe on the pant, for example.

For the rest of the season - stick with traditional uniforms.

  • The problem with checkerboards on the uniform/helmet is that it makes us look like crash test dummies.

Plus, the orange of the checkerboards do not match the orange of the Power T. Two shades of orange on a helmet won't work, IMO.

I agree with frosty and denver. Our helmets are classic, among the best in college football. I would not object to an occasional black jersey or even a one-time throwback. But I think our helmets should not be altered.

  • I am with you OP. I think we need to have a couple of games a year - one home and one away - where we do something with our full uniform. It would create excitement among the players and recruits, something this SHOULD be all about.

  • I hate Oregon's stupid different uniform each week. That being said I wouldn't mind us wearing special uniforms once a year. But only ONCE.

I wonder if Nike picks up the tab on all their uniforms? If they don't, I'd guess the Ducks' uniform budget is comparable to our recruiting budget.

I used to be a PURE traditionalist about the UT program, from offensive system to uniforms, to pre-game, I wanted everything to be the same, but I have had a change of heart.....

I used to believe it was a badge of honor; the plainer the uniform, the more steeped in tradition the program I watched seemed to be (Nebraska, Penn State, Alabama, Tennessee leap to mind), and thought that we made our statement ON THE FIELD, and not on our uniforms. God Forbid we would add a 3rd color to our scheme......

...but we have to adapt to change to remain relevant, otherwise we would still be running the single wing and riding to games in Horse & Buggy.

It will not kill the program to have our own version of Nike Combat uniforms, and if younger recruits & fans are drawn to the program as a result, then I am for it.

We see thousands of different T-shirts, jerseys, orange camo-pants (still love those), overalls, etc., on Gameday, I see NO GOOD reason why the team should wear the same uniforms weekend in and weekend out.

I used to worry if they even added a leg-stripe or changed the lettering style, that any type of modification to the uniform would destroy out football tradition, but I now believe that type of thinking to be totally wrong.

We should be willing to move forward while still holding onto our core of traditional beliefs, JMO

My feeling have always been stay traditional. With that being said, I do think we could "tweek" the uniforn and stay in that vane. Examples: Adding silver into the uniforms like: Changing helmet color to a matte silver finish, use either orange power T trimmed in white, or power T with checkerboard print, and use orange face mask. On uniforms, add silver pants for home, home jerseys would stay traditional orange, but use silver numbers with white trim, or white numbers with silver trim either way. Away jerseys white with orange numbers and silver trim, same for pants. ORRRRR......to be more modern away jerseys could be silver, orange numbers, with white trim/accents....Just some thoughts about things that would not be too wild, and stray too far from traditional. Just thinking lol...

If were being traditional the original color was black starting in 1911. We didnt adopt orange until 1927.

With that said I don't want to go as far as Oregon. I honestly don't think they repeated a combination this year, but I can't prove it. Combat unis are out too, sorry. I think wearing an alternate once or twice a year is fine. Don't advertise it, play it up and turn it into motivation for the other team. Don't try a blackout, white out or any other gimmick, we proved tonight we cant pull off anything like that.

Im good with black or sliver variations, but we have to change the helmet to match....black unis with a white helmet is like wearing dress socks with your tennis shoes. Functional yes, motivating no! And while Im on a roll, I would like to see a orange helmet with a white T.

  • I still think the orange metallic helmet for a big game would be epic. I'm 56 and as conservative as they come but there is a reason I buy a new car every few years. It has new styling and a fresh look. Hell, even Notre Dame and Navy have updated their looks. Times change. So should we.

I agree. Nothing wrong with change! Doesn't have to be day and night difference, or crazy with color. Orange already is a "beautifully wild" color for uniforms. We need to do something to give us a little "attitude" on the field, get fans riled up, and components scratching their heads. Like I said in my last post.....Tweek it a little. NO NIKE COMBAT stuff!!!!!

Agreed! +1 thus my suggesting matte silver helments or something in that vane.

Don't bother wondering... they don't get charged for them... Phil Knight is one of their biggest donors.

I agree RTA however, it should not be a problem to get the same shade of orange for the T & the stripes simply because the same company makes both pieces. HG peak makes the T and the stripes so they would simply use the same sheet of material.

  • I remember I almost fell out of my chair when the Vols came out in the black jerseys after they warmed up in orange. What a momentum builder that was and the fans went wild.
It set the tone for a big victory over SC that memorable night. In todays SEC, teams are so competitive that even the smallest edge can mean the difference between victory and defeat. I say to the Vol coaches---don't be afraid to try something new or different with the uniforms. Football times are changing and the Vols have to change and evolve too, or be left behind.
