    No way would smart be a better hire than butch jones!! Kirby hasn't won the 1st college football game! Not 1. & the 2 prior bammer coaches that have been here haven't worked out real well,, IMO.
    I say we give Butch Jones a freaking chance! Geeze!!

  • Question for Wes, Ryan, and Kevin: Is it reasonable to expect a much lower salary for Jones as compared to Strong? I'd like to see Jones surrounded by some of the best assistants in the country. After all, money shouldn't be an issue according to Hart.

  • Well, it's been fun, guys. I'm sorry to say I have no confidence in this hire. Would love to be wrong. I will not be fooled into accepting this guy just because the administration puts him in front of us. This has been botched from the start. Go Vols nonetheless.

  • Being at Bama probably helps smarts recruiting a lot, I really don't believe he's that good of a recruiter. What recruit wouldn't have interest in Bama right now so him having that behind him helps a lot. And the fact butch lost to dooley is irrelevant, Tennessee has much better talent and you can't judge a coach off one loss.

  • So, here are more thoughts on Butch Jones (if anyone is interested, if not, you can skip over them). This is not the right hire for us. Not because he may or may not be a good coach, but because he is not a splash hire or a "name". The hire needs to be someone most of the fans can get behind (like Butch Davis). Jones would have to win right away to get fan support and that may not be possible for 2-3 years. A name coach can take 2-3 years to win and keep fan support. If Jones doesn't get it done right away, the cupboard could very well be bare when the next coach is hired, and then we are right back to January 2010. If we hire someone with a name, that is a proven recruiter, at least we would be stocked for the next guy if he doesn't work out. JMO. Anyone have a differing opinion or see flaws in my rationale?

    If Jones keeps jay, pittman, and adds tee and maybe one other great recruiter he will be fine. he beat strong 2 our of 3 times and beat the heck out of franklin. hey if it is Jones I am in and lets hit the ground running.

    You obviously don't know of the Kirby Raid. Might want to bring more facts before you say he's not that good.

  • We need someone to come in here a light a fire under these kids tails and be likable at the same time. Butch Jones might be the perfect man for that. If you have Sam Pittman, Tee Martin, and Jay Graham we will get a ton of talent through them. I'm curious to see if he'd keep Sunseri. Sunseri doesn't even go out on the road to recruit? Wasn't he supposed to be a big time recruiter?

  • same ones wants smart ..wanted dooley..hart..sal..flame away but come on man its hard to trust another bama hire..coaching tree and ad...i say if jones is the next head coach..wich ide say he is...pulling back from colorado job sealed our fait or harts or cheek somebodys after next 2-3 years...its plain cheek & hart isnt big time as everyone thought...bad thing is jones is going to work for us..and i think he can come here and win..he see's something.to jump cincy and come here..if wisconsin

  • Butch is a good hire but I did expect a bigger name than him just based on what Hart set as the expectation on his press conference...

    That to me is what makes Jones a hire that deflates the fan base. Had they squashed the Gruden rumors and let us see the real candidates people would not be mad at the hire.

    Not sure maybe you missed it but it came out today that Hart wanted to get davis but Susan Martin in the ut admin shot davis down. So we were never getting davis.

  • I can go with Jones if he keeps the offensive staff and hires a phenomenal defensive staff! If he's coming to manage the overall program and be a good sideline decision maker then great! I don't seem him as a great recruiter and I don't see any great defense in his past, so he had better be able to hire one awesome recruting and scheming defensive staff! If he brings that green-brown-mush shit defensive staff he had at Cincy and relieves anybody on our offensive staff, I will not buy a ticket next year or watch one game until I see some five star recruits signing or long winning streaks on the ticker. This will not fill Neyland by itself!

  • I've never commented before on 247, but Butch Jones is a good hire for other schools, just not Tennessee. Recruiting for Tennessee takes a good recruiter, and I don't believe Jones has it in him.

  • No one knows how this will turn out if jones is hired. Heck he could turn out to be great or bad we don't know. As long as he puts great effort into putting great people around him to help him coach im fine with him being our coach. Im gonna get behind him no matter what cause i think he will do fine. Yea hes not a big name coach thats gonna unite the fan base, how do we know that until we see what he puts on the field for us next year if he is hired. I bet he does a better job than most people think he will.
