Very surprised by this. Why would anyone booster think Kirby Smart is a better hire then Butch Jones? Ties to the deep south or not, I want a proven head coach not a Nick Saban disciple. I've had enough of those.

I did miss that, but I was only using him as an example as he was the one that came to mind when I was typing. What about Pellini. It was reported the he reached out to TN. We know he's a great defensive coach and has recruited in the SEC before.

So we proved the country right. TN is not aiming for the top. This hire will let the world know that we are fine trying to be bowl worthy. I've spent a fortune following this team across Americal and I can no longer justify it. I was instructed at birth to love this team and what my parents spent 35 yrs building, this administration has destroyed in 3.... How can anyone sell me on this hire other than saying " It's better than Dooley" Someone convince me that we have a brighter future than Vandy....I'm waiting,,,,,,, Mike Hamilton, somewhere tonight, is adopting another child and laughing his butt off at how we followed his hiring manual.....

Come on guys. Let's give the guy a chance. I've looked over some of the stuff folks have posted on Butch, and he seems to be a pretty competent coach and a good hire. No, he is not the greatest hire ever - but a coach that everybody said would be a terrific hire could fail too, you just don't know until he gets in there. Maybe the problem with the program is the fact that the fan base is so easily dissatisfied. Get it together guys.

Butch seems like a solid, passionate coach who cares about and motivates players - we need that. I liked what I saw in last years video about him being named Big East Coach of the Year. So let's cut all the doom and gloom, forget the coach's that we never should have gone after because they were never going to leave, and rally around a coach that WANTS TO COME HERE for heavens sake.

For the record - yes, I'm new to the boards, wanted to follow the coaching search, and I'm a not a Knoxville native, but since I moved down here in middle school, now I'm a Junior at UT, I've loved the Vols and the passion of the fans and have become a passionate fan and am a proud Volunteer. And I for one am ashamed at how many folks say they bleed orange, yet never seem to be happy. Granted, this hasn't been the most heartening past couple of days, but UT is still a great school, with a great tradition, and we will rise again! And for those who say we're the laughingstock of the SEC - rather than complain and lament our problems - let's hold our heads high, welcome our new coach with open arms and show the SEC why it is so great the be a Tennessee Vol.
