All of you who are angry about Jones need to grow up. Real fans support their team. They don't try to tear it down.
If Jones is hired, and at this point I hope he is, your behavior and your mealy-mouthed hatred will be used by every recruiter of every school that recruits against UT.
They and you will put down Jones, his staff and the team. People like Basilio and his ilk will spout their meanness to inflame the crowd and magnify everything said. They don't care what damage it does as long as they get followers—> more money.
Players and prospective recruits listen. They hear the negativity. And, the louder it gets, the more they will be affected by it. Eventually, recruits will go elsewhere, citing instability because all other recruiters will be telling them that and so will you.
The players THAT STAY and those that do come may lose respect for the coaching staff and school. Hopefully, that won't impact their performance. But, they are still kids most of them.
And, guess what? We will be replacing this coach in a couple of years because he couldn't recruit and fans wouldn't come and he couldn't coach and fans don't like him.
And, don't say that winning will change that. It won't. Many people haven't forgiven Fulmer for they way Majors retired. Winning a NC didn't help that! You will still hate because that is what you thrive on.
Is that what you want to happen? Again? More discord. More hatred. Firing yet another coach. Going through a search where coaches won't come because of how you, the fans, treat him? Because it sure will be like that if you keep it up.
You will run Jones, or whomever we hire, out on a rail just like you did Dooley.

We DID aim for the top. Repeatedly. And we missed. You know that if you've been following this search at all. If we throw a ton of money at the coaches and they still won't come, we can't do anything about it.
So you stop spending money on the team until you see whether the new coach wins? Fine; that's fair and reasonable, after the failures of the last 5 years. The world won't end if you choose to watch from the recliner for the next 2 years (we won't know what we've got in Jones until year 2 at the earliest, IMO).
And Mike Hamilton would have hired a search firm and not spent as much time chasing the high profile hires with the Brinks truck full of money. Hart struck out, but he tried. Hammy would have hired Jones or Smart last Saturday. I'm not defending either, but I am saying they're different.

FWIW I would rather have Smart than Jones. More upside IMO and we need someone who can recruit, and has proven he can recruit in the south. Saban has said he has only trusted two people to run his defense, Smart and Muschamp. IMO those two are heads above the rest of the Saban coaching tree. I'll get behind either one but would be much more excited about a Smart hire...no pun intended. There is a reason so many teams have been after Smart the last few years and so many were after Muschamp (including us when we hired Doolander).

I appreciate the heartfelt post, but what you could say and be just as accurate is that the majority of fans at pretty much ANY big-time school are idiots. It's true. This day and age, they're more unreasonable, irrational, impatient and demanding than ever. They're spoiled babies. Other places moreso than Tennessee. Ever listened to some of the Bammers complaining on Finebaum's show? A bunch wanted Saban fired after losing to A&M. No kidding.
And as you indicate, the "idiot quotient," as I like to refer to it, is much, much lower around 247 than other places. And that's also why so many of us tend to like it here.
Finally, the bandwagon fans did shout down the Fulmer haters when we were on a roll, and take the old Majors guard's seats at Neyland. Yes, a few are still around, but even if winning doesn't cure their hate, death does. Most are old enough they're either dead or soon will be. I have a hard time believing that hate will be passed down to kids and grandkids.
But still, the bottom line is: you wanna avoid irrational, mean-spirited hate--and idiots? You can't be a big-time sports fan, then. It's just not possible.
But hey, we're not as bad as european soccer hooligans. Right, Wes?

Yeah but if you look back at TN players from the last 2 years from FL they are on average higher rated than the ones at Cincy. LOTS of teams get "average" 2 star and 3 star players from FL. Besides I was comparing what Smart has done compared to Jones NOT what TN has done compared to Jones, no comparison there. On another note some of us wouldn't consider FL part of the south... but I digress
