FWIW Everybody wants to talk about recruiting and everybody likes to talk about getting kids from the state of Florida.....FWIW I crunched some numbers from UT and UC's current rosters......

The University of Cincinnati has 20 kids from the state of Florida....

    http://www.gobearcats.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/cinn-m-footbl-mtt.html

The University of Tennessee has 13 kids from the state of Florida.

    http://www.utsports.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/tenn-m-footbl-mtt.html

Looks to me like Butch Jones can recruit Florida and he has a pipeline.

Dude! You are bringing it tonight!

This is such a good post. I just kills me to hear the whinners and naysayers. Once we hire a coach ya'll better get behind him cause you (The UT Fan) should make him shine. Our recruits need to know that a true UT Vol Fan has the guts to stand shoulder to shoulder with our coach. If you preach that the team should suck it up and perform to their best, then by gum you should suck it up and perform at your best! The question is, "Are ya up to the challenge?".

I appreciate the heartfelt post, but what you could say and be just as accurate is that the majority of fans at pretty much ANY big-time school are idiots. It's true. This day and age, they're more unreasonable, irrational, impatient and demanding than ever. They're spoiled babies. Other places moreso than Tennessee. Ever listened to some of the Bammers complaining on Finebaum's show? A bunch wanted Saban fired after losing to A&M. No kidding.

And as you indicate, the "idiot quotient," as I like to refer to it, is much, much lower around 247 than other places. And that's also why so many of us tend to like it here.

Finally, the bandwagon fans did shout down the Fulmer haters when we were on a roll, and take the old Majors guard's seats at Neyland. Yes, a few are still around, but even if winning doesn't cure their hate, death does. Most are old enough they're either dead or soon will be. I have a hard time believing that hate will be passed down to kids and grandkids.

But still, the bottom line is: you wanna avoid irrational, mean-spirited hate--and idiots? You can't be a big-time sports fan, then. It's just not possible.

But hey, we're not as bad as european soccer hooligans. Right, Wes? biggrin

So, because everyone else behaves badly, we should too?

I don't think so. We should be better than that.

If you are waiting on death, the braying, negative crowd is young. You'll be waiting a long time.

And, finally, what excuse you going to give if the crowd sending hate to Jones's twitter account cause him to tell us "no"?

Frankly, I couldn't blame him if he turns us down. Or anyone else given the way some people are acting.

For God's sake, Jones lost to DOOLEY. Screw you, Hart / Cheek and company.

    censored.

So he lost to Dooley.that is got to be the dumbest point you could make for not hiring butch jones.he beat strong 2 times and I bet a lot of these same donkeys making this statement were all for hiring strong.he may or may not end being a good hire but the fact he lost to dd is irrelevant.

[fans] bashing Jones already though Twitter (which is utterly childish). . .

I post about idiot fans above, and presto, they appear like magic on the ol' tweeter thingy. biggrin

Moronic, cowardly children. Even if they're 72. They don't even know the man and feel it's appropriate to attack him verbally through the insulation of cyberspace. no

Not sure maybe you missed it but it came out today that Hart wanted to get davis but Susan Martin in the ut admin shot davis down. So we were never getting davis.

Apologies if somewhat OT, but do we know the rationale behind this decision (from Martin?) I was secretly hoping we might end up with Butch Davis, and if he truly has been cleared of all wrongdoing, I don't understand the objection to him. Anybody know what happened here?

I'm not going to try and defend everyone, but there must be room for legitimate criticism and vigorous debate. I will be disappointed in a Jones hire and I have stated my reasons repeatedly tonight. But just because I point out what I feel are sound reasons for concern regarding Jones does NOT mean I am not a "real" or "true" fan. I will support the team and coach no matter the hire. But I will not sit idly by and stay silent in the face of what I believe to be a poor decision.

Yeah but if you look back at TN players from the last 2 years from FL they are on average higher rated than the ones at Cincy. LOTS of teams get "average" 2 star and 3 star players from FL. Besides I was comparing what Smart has done compared to Jones NOT what TN has done compared to Jones, no comparison there. On another note some of us wouldn't consider FL part of the south... but I digress lol

That's just SEC vs. Big East. No surprise there at all.

The key is that Jones can and does recruit Florida. His detractors are saying he can't recruit in the South. And yes, when it comes to college football players, Florida is definitely the South.

Will Muschamp 0 yrs head coaching experience.

It's Florida. As in the only SEC school in the best recruiting state in the country. He inherited a stacked roster and doesn't exactly have to beg people to come there. Let's not anoint him Vince Lombardi

OK. But the post you replied to did not (to me at least) appear to be complaining about Hart not using a search firm but rather critisizing Hamilton's mis-use of one.

Check out his overall numbers including having 12th ranked scoring defense this year. Currently 56 in recruiting where Louisville is 90. I loved Charlie strong but this isn't as bad as we have all made it out to be based on one loss to a team with way more talent even with Dooley.

  • True Jones does have ties to Memphis, Atlanta and FL and that's good if he gets hired...however I don't think anyone would argue that Smart is a better recruiter and knows more about recruiting in the SEC than Jones.

I believe what people have concerns over is can Jones get the elite recruits out of the south away from the likes of saban, miles, richt, spurrier etc..TONs of coaches from across the country get players out of Florida..few get the 4 and 5 stars away from the big dogs. That is in part why people liked strong - he pulled Bridgewater out..

  • WKR can we get any clarification?

For example is this a situation like the one with Strong where the longer it goes the more likely it is Jones isn't the guy, either by him turning it down or a switch to another candidate?

If the reports of a PC in the morning are true I would think the longer it goes the more the dissenting boosters are gaining favor.

  • Offensive lineman Antonio "Tiny" Richardson tweeted: "Could someone educate me on who Butch Jones is? Thanks."

Imagine what high school recruits will think & count on our best Jr's going to the NFL. He better retain Graham and bring in Tee Martin...

The Butch Jones hire sucks in every aspect and to settle on Butch further diminishes UT as a Top tier SEC school. Every UT fan has to be pissed off, just like every UT fan was pissed to lose to Vandy. Nothing wrong with setting high expectations

agreed, and remember it was a Dooley coached team with Wilcox as DC.
Wonder what the outcome would've been had the game been played THIS year with Sunseri's D?cry

I don't think so. We should be better than that.

If you are waiting on death, the haying crowd is young. You'll be waiting a long time.

And, finally, what excuse you going to give if the crowd send hate to Jones's twitter account cause him to tell us "no"?

Frankly, I couldn't blame him if he turns us down. Or anyone else give the way people are acting.

Well, I was trying to help you out here, but you misunderstood at least half of what I wrote, so let me try again. NO, we SHOULDN'T be like everybody else. It's NOT OK. It's WRONG. But just because something OUGHT to be a certain way (look how many times you used "should"), and using that word, I agree with you.

But it is what it is. People in every fan base, ours included, are gonna act like that. You can be mad and tear yourself up, but you CANNOT change it, even with a great, heartfelt post like the first one you made above. When I was young, I tilted at windmills, too, but after hitting my stubborn head up against a few, I learned to accept some of the realities of life that SHOULD be another way, but aren't, and that I just can't do anything about, except get mad and give myself an ulcer (which I did, btw). You know the trite, cliche', cornball serenity prayer?

As cornball as it is, it's still a good one for a reason, and if you want to know the difference between the things you can change and the things you can't, all I was doing was telling you that, even though I AGREE WITH YOU on the morality of how fans SHOULD behave, this is one of those things you can't change.

You can't get rid of the idiots by telling them to leave and go away. It won't work. They won't leave. I'd love it if it would work, but it won't.

As for the "hating crowd," young people these days seem to hate everything, not just how things are going with their sports teams, and while I don't like that, either, I can't change that except for the contact I have with a few individual kids who might actually listen to me. You brought up the Majors issue, though, so I chose to address it.

Finally, I don't owe anyone an excuse, an explanation or a reason of any sort for the behavior of idiots behaving horribly on twitter, whether or not it causes Jones to tell us no. Each of us is responsible for our own behavior. In fact, I've already expressed my opinion rather strongly in a post above, and outright condemned it.

But that's not going to change anything either.

I don't expect you to agree with me, from this last post of yours, and it is JMHO, but I've learned the hard way to fight like heck when I can do something to right a wrong, but when I can't, not to beat my head against a wall. It accomplishes nothing when I get myself that worked up, and steals my energies from the causes I can actually do something about. A few well-meaning internet posters can't change an entire fan base, even though I agree with you it SHOULD behave better.

  • Muschamp actually did not walk into the stacked team many assume. Meyer had become complacent for the last few years with many busts. It was not as bad as what Dooley inherited. And recruiting in Florida easier. But look at Muschamp's coaching and in-game adjustments this year...his or his assts...amazing job.

At Cincy he was recruiting 2 and 3 star players from Florida because the 4 and 5 star kids wouldn't bat an eye at Cincy. Tennessee has much better facilities and plays in the SEC where he will be recruiting the top talent in Florida and the will pay attention.

I loved strong I liked him more than gruden from day 1. But after looking at current recruiting numbers Jones has way better class than strong. 56 and 90 respectively according to 24/7. I mean I'm not sold on this being a good hire, YET, but I do feel like this guy has potential. Also 12th ranked scoring defense, in the country, this year. Be hopeful the pessimism is too ugly.
