Update: Do Vols have their man?

  • If this hire goes through. Its not gonna help the guy one bit to come in to a fan base immediately saying we don't care about this coach and he ain't gonna win games anyway. I'm ready to get behind and show the support he deserves until he were to give me a reason to do otherwise. His passion will unite the team together, and the right staff of assistants will get recruiting rolling strong. So if he's hired I will say it again, VOLNATION needs to get behind this guy! Go Vols!

  • You guys need to return from your visit to dreamland and come back to reality. It seems like the consensus is that the only reason you guys don't like him is because Dooley beat Jones at Cinci. Seriously? How about doing some research on Jones before spouting off judgement. How ignorant.

Listen, we're going to hire a coach very soon and his name isn't going to be Gruden, Strong, Gundy, Stoops or Fisher. That means he more than likely wasn't your first choice. You know we don't always get what we want in life but things have a way of working out just fine or even better if you accept the reality of the situation and make the best with what you have.

I would suggest getting on board with the new coach whether you agree with the hire or not. If you can't provide support then do us, Real Vol fans who reside on planet Earth, a favor and please pull for a different team. Your negativity and constant whining is getting really annoying.

"things have a way of working out..." ? Actually, they don't. Especially if you stifle legitimate criticism. E.g. Dooley..we accepted our "reality" there and where are we now?

Yes, of course he could whip their butts, but people who do that sort of thing are almost universally cowards. That's why they pick twitter and the like.

dober, you are an astute poster and I always make time to stop and read your posts...but, I'm sure you will allow for reasoned dissent. I'm not talking about the feeble minded juveniles who are evidently tweeting Jones, but others who love this program as much as anyone, but have significant reservations about Jones ability to succeed here.

Reasoned dissent? Not so much reason to look down on man without looking at what we really got. Not trying to hate but why is that? Check my couple recent posts about his numbers and add in 50-27 overall record not too bad. Just give him a shot.

not going to debate this any longer, I have posted on other threads the concerns I have. I would only say you ought look to who his teams have played and what signature wins he has. But I digress. My point only is that, yes, believe it or not, there is room for legitimate spirited debate over this decision amongst well meaning vol fans. I get concerned when I read posts insinuating that if you don't like this hire you need to keep quiet or go away.. That's a pretty dangerous attitude.

Sitting back and being quiet because you can't change anything never changes anything.

People today are afraid to speak up, demand better "anything." They just go on their way.

It's how we got the government we now have. By sitting back and not demanding better.

Fwiw, it isn't tilting at windmills, it's standing up and demanding better when that is the right thing to do.

You ever complain to people you are with about bad service? All of us do. But, damn few make those complaints to management.

People give bad service because they don't care. People accept bad service because they don't want to rock the boat (don't care enough to complain).

If people don't stand up for what is right, then they don't get what is right. That is just plain sad.

No. I didn't misread what you wrote. You provided excuses and treated it like it was common and patronized me with the tone of what you wrote, just as you did above.

Yeah, it's one of those tithings I can't change you said, implying I should just accept it.

Well, if I do that, accepting it would be telling them its OK when it isn't.

It is not OK to behave like that. There are consequences, in this case, to the program as I noted earlier.

The actions that you imply I should just accept hurt people too.

Just like bullying, it is not OK. If enough of us stand up and say that, then it will begin to change. But, that change will never happen if no one stands up to it. Instead, the haters will bully us because we allow them to.

So, please quit patronizing me. It is not OK behavior. And, it is not OK to ignore it just because everyone does it and it isn't going away.

Well, I told you I wouldn't change your mind. I didn't follow my own advice, now, did I? lol

Feel free to take it as patronizing, even though it wasn't intended that way, but you sound like me twenty years ago, so you struck a chord with me, and I answered you sincerely. Don't worry; since I apparently can't help offending your sensibilities, I won't try to interact further with you after this post. Several quickies, though, to answer your accusations:

-I DO complain to managers about bad service.

-If you saw my twitter feed, you'd know I was very active in politics, but because it's not (and shouldn't be) an acceptable topic of discussion here on a sports forum, I haven't even shared my twitter handle. I spend my own money to contribute to lobbying efforts for causes I believe in, though, because I know that sort of thing does make a difference.

-Because churches and charities can make a difference, I donate there as well.

-I try to help people through my work when I can, but have to say no when I know I can't.

We'll have to agree to disagree about the fan behavior deal, though, because I view it as night and day different in terms of whether my not liking it, and/or complaining about it, can effect real change, and do anything about it. You think I'm wrong, and that's fine. I'll leave it at that. surrender

We can at least agree to support the new coach's efforts, no matter who he is.

Sincere good luck to you, sir, in your quest for better fan behavior. I agree wholeheartedly with your intended and desired goal.

Good evening to you. I'm middle aged; I've been up waaaaaay past my bedtime; and I have to be at the office early tomorrow morning.

You also need to look at where he coaches and what facilities he has from which to recruit.

Pretty crappy. And all he does is win.

  • Butch Jones obviously was not even in my top 7 but having said that one thing that i do like about him is that he wants to be at UT and he has won everywhere he has been. Dooley beating him means absolutely nothing. Dooley should have beat him. It was UT vs Cincy. UT is supposed to win that game no matter who is coaching. Do i wish we would have gotten one of the bigger names? Of course i do, but if Butch Jones is our man then he has my full support and I think he will do fine. I really dont think he could do any worse than Dooley. GO VOLS!

You're correct. My remarks were NOT directed at you in any way or anyone else like you. There's a difference between reasoned dissent and a cowardly attack via name-calling. I have no problem whatsoever with anyone disagreeing with the hire or arguing against it. Shucks, that's what this forum is for. And as for what you've specifically argued, you haven't just repeated the "he lost to Dooley" thing over and over, as some have, but have made other points.

Anyhoo, I was ONLY referring to the name callers and anonymous insulters on twitter.

To those juveniles, I kind of agree with what someone else suggested above: If they feel like some of the things they've said about Jones, they ought to put on their big boy pants and say it to his face and see what happens. If so, I hope someone is filming, and he goes all Bobby Knight on their butts.

but when you say "all he does is win", that's just hyperbole. He loses. His team played three ranked teams this year and lost to two of them. His third loss? Toledo.. And using UC as an excuse is blunted by the fact that Brian Kelly took his last two teams at UC to BCS bowl games! Kelly's last team was undefeated. So you CAN win at an elite level there and Jones has not. No BCS bowl, not a single signature win in his entire coaching career, and no history of recruiting a top 25 class..so what gives anyone the idea that this will all change when he gets here?? History demonstrates he is a good coach in a very mediocre league.
