not going to debate this any longer, I have posted on other threads the concerns I have. I would only say you ought look to who his teams have played and what signature wins he has. But I digress. My point only is that, yes, believe it or not, there is room for legitimate spirited debate over this decision amongst well meaning vol fans. I get concerned when I read posts insinuating that if you don't like this hire you need to keep quiet or go away.. That's a pretty dangerous attitude.

but when you say "all he does is win", that's just hyperbole. He loses. His team played three ranked teams this year and lost to two of them. His third loss? Toledo.. And using UC as an excuse is blunted by the fact that Brian Kelly took his last two teams at UC to BCS bowl games! Kelly's last team was undefeated. So you CAN win at an elite level there and Jones has not. No BCS bowl, not a single signature win in his entire coaching career, and no history of recruiting a top 25 class..so what gives anyone the idea that this will all change when he gets here?? History demonstrates he is a good coach in a very mediocre league.

Majors had a horrible record as a head coach before he came to Tennessee and Fulmer had never even been a head coach when he was hired! When Tennessee hired both of those guys, they weren't "home run" hires like everyone on this site expected this hire to be. Those guys were only able to succeed when given the chance to coach a big time program like Tennessee. Butch Jones is far more proven than both Majors and Fulmer were coming into this job.. Maybe he just needs to be in a big time program to completely flourish. The guy is nothing like Dooley.

This guy is not like Dooley at all? How many times did Dooley win coach of the year in his conference? Jones has done it twice. And it's funny you bring up Fulmer and Majors.. Oh come on. He isn't remotely like Dooley. He is a proven winner from a smaller conference. Those are the types of hires almost every program across the nation makes when their job comes open. It's usually either that or a coordinator. Dooley had a losing record, no coordinator experience, and a personality that made him extremely hard to work with. This guy is fiery and a leader and will earn the respect of the players. You don't have to like the hire but don't lump him in with Dooley. Compared to that hire this one would be a grand slam.

So, here are more thoughts on Butch Jones (if anyone is interested, if not, you can skip over them). This is not the right hire for us. Not because he may or may not be a good coach, but because he is not a splash hire or a "name". The hire needs to be someone most of the fans can get behind (like Butch Davis). Jones would have to win right away to get fan support and that may not be possible for 2-3 years. A name coach can take 2-3 years to win and keep fan support. If Jones doesn't get it done right away, the cupboard could very well be bare when the next coach is hired, and then we are right back to January 2010. If we hire someone with a name, that is a proven recruiter, at least we would be stocked for the next guy if he doesn't work out. JMO. Anyone have a differing opinion or see flaws in my rationale?
