I remember someone telling me awhile back that they weren't going to make dickel anymore I guess they were wrong.....live on the west coast and haven't looked for it in awhile....usually default to Maker's or Jack if I am looking for Bourbon or Tennessee Whiskey....hate it when they call Jack (or Dickel) boubon

Neat, usually. Dickel is still making whisky, they're just keeping a low profile. They've got a single barrel product now that is outstanding.
Jack Daniel on the other hand is cranking out old number 7 by the tank car. They can't keep up with the tourist trade. Dickel is much better stuff.
Yeah I noticed that Jack went away from their original 86 proof to 80....probably for the same reasons you point out. They used to have a green label that was 80 proof due to some of their whiskey not being quite as good so they would cut it more and make it 80 as opposed to the black/86 proof...the last decade or so it's all 80 proof commercial grade stuff.
I usually prefer Makers but when we play KY I usually have to drink something from TN
