You need a total of 10 votes to get 5 stars. Your rating also has to be above an 80 to have 5 stars.

Just let you know who a high rated poster and who is not. If a poster only has 1 or 2 stars than most likely they are trolling a lot. 4 and 5 star posters seem to contribute reasonable post in threads and usually don't flame.
You can also "follow" higher rated posters only buy clicking on it at the top of the board. Hope this helps

Also you get 25 votes a day. Only 5 of those can be down votes. (I think that is accurate) it takes a really stupid post for me to downvote anyone though.
If poster up or downvote the first post in the thread (like this one has ±13) it let's you know it a great thread or subject

There are 2 other features that I use on this site everyday. The "ignore" feature is one. You can ignore a certain poster if you want for whatever reason. No one on this site, but I "ignore" a few posters on the blue board.
The other is "follow boards". This is the fastest ways to go from one board to another. I post on the blue board, green board and some other team sites from time to time. When your on a certain board, let's say florida, and you want to visit there everyday, you can click on "follow board" and it will save it.
Word of advice, don't go on other team boards and post stupid stuff, you will get downvoted in a hurry or banned. Some of the best boards are blue board (orangeasylum and I post there a lot), off topic board on michigan state site (its crazy on there some days), kentucky and unc board for bball,
