VFL Program Details

  • In a recent article, Wes referrenced an article that GV247 wrote about the VFL program and that Dooley wasn't happy with the article because it potentially exposed some of the unique characteristics of it and he was afraid people would start to copy it, therefore taking away from a recruiting advantage that he had created.

Could someone post that article. I would like to read it. Just using context clues I've developed an understanding of the VFL program but I've never known the details of it.

    TIA

  • I think it would be this one:

Vol for Life: Three words that created 28 new Tennessee Vols

GVX247 spoke with 10 of Tennessees 28 new football signees on Wednesday night, and all credited the Vol for Life program as a major factor in their final decision.

  • Kind of funny that Dooley talked about this VFL "Network" of former players but then heavily restricted former player involvement in the program. Wonder if the program might not flourish even more under Jones, who, from initial statements and actions, wants to really involve former lettermen. Should be interesting.

In the end, I think this is something that Dooley should be remembered and thanked for. This really has given us something to set us apart from other schools who have more to sell right now in the recent w/l category.

  • I was planning on asking about this today. I remember the original article, but wanted to read it again.

I love the concept and, like most everyone else, thought it was a great idea. It's impossible to believe that other schools wouldn't try and copy that concept...and word of it was certain to get out regardless of an article being written.

I've often thought about making some sort of youth program along the lines for my youth teams. Helping the boys as they become teens and into men. Something along the lines of giving back to the community and to the youth programs.

I am tentatively planning on coaching youth football again next season. I talked at length about creating a "(team name) for Life program with my wife last night.
