Gap control always seemed like the biggest risk in the shift from a 43 to a 34...all the front 7 defenders have (or may have) different gap responsibilities than they would have previously (especially along the d-line). Hardly a "small mistake", it could be a major major problem for the run D if not fixed. Pretty much impossible to overcome poor gap integrity, no matter what the scheme or talent level of the individual defenders.
