Denver,If you end up being correct about Franklin, I should clearly eat my words. But as someone that follows franklin closely, it's highly likely that he will maintain bobby johnson's grad rates. I'm demanding for muschamp to do the same. I hope you ask the same of butch.

You make it sound like athletes go to school and make most of their own choices... Nothing could be further from the truth. They're plugged into a system that encourages or disregards academics and off the field incidents. Here in Gainesville, we've averaged not quite 1 arrest per month during urban & muschamp's reign. If vu did that I wouldn't cheer for them... And I won't cheer for Uf, regardless of their on field success. Cheer for Vanderbilt for running a clean program (& while I didn't like some of the tweets from vu players yesterday either, please don't compare them to 50+ arrests at Uf)

They are plugged into a system that offers all sorts of support. They are surrounded by people that would love to see them succeed. Not only do many of them make decisions to not try in class, many of them make decisions TO try. And you have no idea which path this young man will take, so please dont act like you do.

When did I compare the tweets from VU players to anything from Florida? I just said that the tweets were ridiculous and it's asinine to assume Rudy Ford won't do well just because he isn't going to Vanderbilt.

Would love to see you stand in front of Robertson and spout off instead of hiding safely behind this board. He's a good student at a good school, a wrestling champion, a super football player, and many more things, sadly, that you and your board mates will never be. I used to root for the Vols and enjoy their Pride of the Southland Band. Band is still good, UThugs not so much.

twocentstrolls Ok just my two cents here but aren't you also spouting off and hiding safely behind a board of a team that you are not even a fan of? I am sorry you are no longer a fan of the big orange but move along.

  • No kidding, pot calling the kettle black there in terms of hiding behind a computer. Pretty childish of the player to make that statement on Twitter when Jones had the courtesy to stop by and talk to him. If he didn't want Coach Jones there, he should have had the guts to tell him. As far as the comment on UTThugs, really easy to say that behind the keyboard. Come say that in person to someone from UT.

That's a fair description of your thoughts on Franklin Denver.

I always feel like I'm fighting an uphill battle on trying to encourage people to have higher expectations of their state universities. If you honestly read the graduation rate numbers and conclude that it's evidence for ut, miss state, auburn, etc doing things the right way (& that there is not a problem), then I'm unlikely to convince you otherwise. Thanks for looking at the numbers though; at least you'll be eyes wide open when cheering on saturdays in the fall. Anyone who thinks aspiring to higher graduation rates for black athletes is elitist (or that it can't be achieved), I'm probably not going to convince otherwise... But again, thanks for listening to the argument.

But Vanderbilt's graduation rate for black male athletes is actually LOWER than for black males as a whole. Tennessee's is higher. That one fact alone renders your entire agenda null and void. The bottom line is that Tennessee is doing more for its athletes in terms of educational assistance than Vanderbilt, and your misplaced, simplistic focus on overall graduation rates overlooks a TON of factors (including admissions standards, curriculum at the respective schools, whether these "non-graduates" actually quit school, transferred elsewhere, or simply took longer than other students to graduate, etc). That report only tells a small portion of the story, and for you to use it to promote your agenda without considering the numerous other factors left out of the study renders your entire argument invalid on its face.

And let's be honest: if you really think that people are going to have their "eyes wide open" on Saturdays this fall when cheering for their favorite schools because you posted this on a message board, then you have absolutely no idea what drives a fanbase to root for their favorite team, whether at the college or pro levels.
