Vince Dooley sour grapes

  • JimmyHyams: Vince Dooley wouldn't rank UT job as top 10 or top 20 but said it has great tradition but doesn't enjoy good recruiting base
Sounds like Papa is bitter to me. I agree that the recruiting base is poor but we are definitely a top 20 job.

    cmacconn

  • Not top 20? Eff off. Top 10 for sure.

    SRDC Vol

  • Top 20 job. Not top 10. 5th best in SEC.

  • You have to recruit the base for there to be a base Vince

Agreed. The staff wasn't putting in the time, and Derek wasn't acting the right way it appears.

  • Recruiting base is Weaker, but off the top of my head...

    JReeves Maybin
    Jalen Ramsey
    Austin Sanders
    Brent Kendrick
    Vonn Bell
    Jalen Hurd..5* 2014
    Josh Malone...2014
    Sheldon Dawson
    Brian Kimbro
    Jelks

And we could go on and on...Plenty of talent in TN now.

  • I have to disagree with Vince, but his son didn't help our situation any

    VolsFan_in_Ky

  • I don't blame him for supporting his son and taking it out of the University. If it was my son I would find excuses for him too.

However our state is producing the best talent weve seen in years and Dooley got out recruited by flipping Vanderbilt for some of it.

    Top Ten easy

  • Probably not gonna be too good when you don't develop the relationships required, as the TFP article from yesterday suggested...

I listened to the interview. He did not say that. He was asked the question, "Is Tennessee a top 10 or 20 job?" Dooley proceed to answer by saying, "Tennessee has lots of tradition....." He did not address the ranking but was complementary of Vol Nation, Knoxville, etc. Vince Dooley was forthcoming and gracious, as always. I am sure it is unintentional but you have misrepresented Vince Dooley's comments.

I suspected that even before I read your reply. I know Vince Dooley and he is a class individual. He would not rip Tennessee and there is no way his attitude could ever be characterized as "sour grapes."

As a Vol in ATL I sure was happy when he left UGA and gave them their lost decade of bad coaching which helped us win 10 straight over the Dawgs. He was always humble, gracious and talented. That would be a nice combo to see these days in the coaching profession. Muschamp should have learned from him.

This makes way more sense than what I read originally. Dooley is a class act all the way and would never trash someone publicly. He has never done that and I have been following him for 30 years.

  • For a more accurate portrayal of Vince after the firing, see this piece bynthe AJC's Jeff Schultz:

Vince Dooley: Joy from Georgia's rise, pain from son's firing | Jeff Schultz

It is mixed emotions for former Georgia coach Vince Dooley, who is enjoying the Bulldogs' resurgence against the backdrop of son Derek's firing at Tennessee.

You're cool man. My beef was with Hyams bringing in guests like Phillip Fulmer and Vince Dooley at this point in time.

I feel like those interviews will have predictable results, clearly Jimmy wanted a certain result from Vince if he's tweeting something out of context, and having those guys on just after one's former job opens back up and the other's son gets fired is sort of in poor taste in my humble opinion.

I don't listen to sports radio much (sorry, Wes) but if I did I'd boycott Hyams.

    Rockytop85

  • His son is bad at his job and he doesn't want to accept it. I can't blame the guy. Dooley will never get another head coaching job and the reason for that isn't because UT's recruit base sucks.

I heard this question and I don't think ole Vince ever really answered the question about where the UT job ranks. He just went off on the recruiting tangent. I am by no means a Dooley fan but I thought Vince sounded almost contrite; nearly apologizing for his kid not getting the job done. Maybe I missed something. shrug

  • We're talking about a coach about to play one of the worst Duke teams in history and when asked about them said, "I think Duke has one of the best long snappers (pronounced "snappahs") that I have ever seen. He will be a real challenge for our punt blocking team". If that ain't a gentleman, I don't know what is.
