Vols' defense lost in translation

As tough as things have been this season for UT's defense, perhaps the toughest part has been a baffling inability to turn sound practice performances into Saturday success.

  • They should just go ahead and file a missing person's report for our defense, since we haven't really seen them all year.

  • The team has a positive attitude and stand behind their coaches and that's great. They obviously love those guys that are there to help them. But it really looks like there are quit a few bad calls on Sal's part.

They don't really have anyone else to stand by. It's kind of like reading a recruiting article on a visit. You never hear of a single recruit having a bad visit, even if they got there and wanted to leave the second they stepped on campus.

  • Say what you want about Dooley and Co. because whatever criticism that comes their way is probably merited. But I, for one, am glad to see these kids accepting responsibility for their play. And no matter how bad the D stunk it up, no matter how many missed assignments and tackles, they still won. And to the kids, that really matters. And that's kinda who it's all about anyway. Orange. GO VOLS!

He's reacting angrily to a bad play.

Thanks and +1 Wes. Anyone else notice how similar the language, from the players, is to what we heard about the running game last year?

I'm glad nobody was takin' pictures of me yesterday when our defense was on the field...., I often found myself in some unusual positions!

Very familiar language, bear. I honestly think we would be better on defense if CDD went to Herm Lathers and said, you are now the defensive coordinator and you're calling all the plays...., good luck!

This. Very important fact... It's for the kids. The rest of us should get outside more often.

Interesting idea. I am looking in my crystal ball and I definitely see a coaching future for Herm. +1 for the idea.

If Fulmer would've empowered Crompton in 08, I think we would've won a few more games. It's amazing how similar the 08 season and this season seem, on opposite sides of the ball.

  • Man that crap ain't even right. As bad as it is these guys go out here and go thru more physical torture in one week than most of us have gone thru in years. There trying, I've never been around a ball player that wanted to stink. With that said it really doesn't matter how bad it's been but how do we stop the bleeding. We all know there not going to turn into an elite d next week.

That's the interesting thing about this. Every part of this defense has shown the ability to be good. The secondary was great against NC State. The LB have played outstandingly in at least one quarter of every game. The front 3 have dominated the interior run game most of the season. If these guys could ever get on the right page, the light bulb might come on and show us a much improved defense. Unfortunately, every time this defense has gotten on the same page, it has been the wrong one

  • I love that comment...same page, but wrong one.

Wow. Historically bad defensive performances. How many times have we heard that this player or that player had a career-best game against Tennessee?

We scraped by Troy. Troy for Pete's sake! No disrespect but we were favored by 18 or so and they get more yards than anyone ever on a UT D!! Are you kidding!!

I am afraid of the next three games. If the offense sputters, we could lose all three. That is a realistic possibility. I would not have thought so before last season. But when we scraped by Vandy and lost to the WR/QB Wildcats, my faith took a hit.
