Vols hire Gillespie to coach RBs

  • He is very well liked by players. Lots of them tweeting him good luck.

For those who criticized Butch, and said it was his fault and that UT couldn't land an elite coach...yeah...awkward...

GO VOLS! GO HEAT! GO PHINS! GO BRAVES! And for those who know soccer: GO BRAZIL! GO GRÊMIO!

  • It's so great to be able to get excited after so much negativity lately. Great new hires as coaches and mens basketball on a roll. Go Big ORANGE!!!

  • All you sunshine pumpers crack me up. This a decent hire all things considered (timing, buyouts, etc...) but make no mistake this is a HUGE downgrade from Jay Graham. We are worse off than we were a few weeks ago.

But you guys just carry on and keep slapping CBJ on the back and saying "atta boy!" . . ignorance is bliss.

How is it a "Huge" downgrade? (not a rhetorical question)

we will carry on it a very good up grade from Graham. Graham was find but he didnt want to be here so we have some one that want to be here and he can recruit fla. or sc.or wv. So where do you get it a downgrade????? GO BIG ORANGE AND GO CBJ

I think it is too early to tell recruiting wise whether this is an upgrade or not, but keep this in mind about CJG:

He didn't want to be here. Him staying wouldn't have done anyone any good. So when we're sitting here talking about "upgrade" or not - remember that an unhappy Jay Graham would not have been very productive for us in coaching or recruiting.

Just a thought. I am glad to see that Butch was able to bring in someone who appears to be a good fit (on paper, anyway) for our offense so quickly - and someone with a resume as good as Gillespie's is, with recruiting connections in Florida to boot.

  • Frankly I never understood the love affair with Jay..We had the best Oline in the SEC but ranked 74th in rushing..(( Partly due to Chaney's pass first offense)) I recall him spending time recoaching the backs not to bounce outside mid season..Which is something that should have been fixed in fall practices..Graham recruited well at other positions but IMO in 2 years the best back he landed was Lane; hardly the big signing we needed and for 2013 we ended up with a 3 star reach that felt like the girl nobody wanted for the prom..It wasn't for lack of effort by Graham but still a game changing back was imperative and once again we missed the boat..Hope Gillespie fairs better.. WVU ranked 47 in rushing with a horrible OLine and a similar passing offense..Gillespie did land an under the radar back in Buie from Jacksonville who ran for nearly 900 yards as a back up and burned Texas for 200 plus yards

  • So one last JG question. I will never doubt his VFL status. But does this mean that he's not Blue Collar?

Can we get back to basketball now?

Btw great hire by Butch Jones, but please let this be the end of the coaching carousel for at least three years.... Time to talk about some basketball...

    Why get back to bb??

How do you figure it's a downgrade?? Graham produced not one 4 or 5* RB in UT's last 2 recruiting classes..Granted he did a decent job coaching Neal & Lane, but IMO the line was more responsible for the improved running game.

Good point..You can talk about bb all you want on a bb article..I see nothing wrong with talking fb on a fb article..Gees.

Great hire!!! Is a excellent recruiter in the South Florida area!

Safe to assume RG has been busy establishing relationships with RB recruits while at WVU.. He did sign Buie out of Jacksonville; who I got to see many times and lit up Texas I believe for 200 plus yards

One note. CJG did not bring in Lane.

No, but he did bring in Marquez North, JRM, Riley Ferguson, Jabo Lee and Jaylen Miller this year for us. Probably the best recruiter on the staff before he left. Graham's contacts were mostly in the carolina's where he was from, and we will miss his presence there.

Is Gillespie a good hire? I have no idea. And im not sure anyone else on this board does either. If y'all dont mind, ill wait and see what the results are on the field and the recruiting trail before i grade this hire. Not that anyone gives a flip about my grade anyway..

    Great hire

I totally agree. I think this is a great hire. He was and is a winner. I also see so many other positives in this hire:
    1. From MS.
    2. Played at Florida.
    3. Has coaching experience.
    4. African-American.
    5. Work-ethic.

All of the above should bode well for UT, the running backs and the team as a whole.
