All you sunshine pumpers crack me up. This a decent hire all things considered (timing, buyouts, etc...) but make no mistake this is a HUGE downgrade from Jay Graham. We are worse off than we were a few weeks ago.

But you guys just carry on and keep slapping CBJ on the back and saying "atta boy!" . . ignorance is bliss.

Just asking...but why do you think this? I am not saying an upgrade but seems like a solid hire.

As for his or Graham's recruiting prowess, let's be honest, our on-field performance will do more for recruiting than anything. If the new coach has ties (and ties into certain areas are a solid first step for any coach) and can bring in good players too, great! But ties alone are not enough, and a RB coach rarely makes or breaks a staff. I just think of so many coaches I have never heard of that go to great programs and then leave a few years later as great recruiters (see several at Bama). So I think recruiting ties are important but on-field is much more important.

Well, that's just like your opinion, man.

Thanks for passing judgment on the guy before he's even moved to Knoxville. I take it you're from the 'guilty until proven innocent ' school of thought.

  • you seem to crack this whole board up,can you remember the days or 90's under steve ?

hes got to be a big time back coach, plus recruiting in florida was a must in this hire imo

now tell me how many big names coach graham landed on his own?

waiting? i just wonder if you are even a vols fan, because you should be ,behind coach jones instead
of your tried and convicted. sorry this is for>>GeneHarrogate

  • Nice reload IMO. He may be better suited to coach RBs in this style offense. More importantly, he wants to be here. Attitude about one's place of employment will surely have bearing on how much effort goes into recruiting. I feel good about it. Our fans make too much out of who played where on our coaching staff. It's nice when you have Vols, but doesn't guarantee any loyalty. How have Chuck Smith and Jay Graham really worked out for us?

Great hire! It's awesome we were able to get our top candidate. The vibe around Vols football program hasn't been this good in a while. Hopefully it stays this way all through spring and the football season. I actually consider Gillespie an upgrade FWIW especially for the system and I thought highly of our previous RB coach.

It's a little tough to admit, so it helps that you put it into words. But yeah, it is an upgrade. Graham did not play in this kind of system. Gillespie did. As much as I love the idea of Graham being the alumnus coach, we need someone who will be effective at coaching AND recruiting. We'll see.

Why do you have to be Debbie downer? I can tell you are such a positive person to be around because the positive energy just lights up around you lol there is absolutely nothing wrong with anyone on here looking at it in a positive way I would much rather here them then to hear your depressing comments! When you don't know any more then the so called sunshine pampers. What would make you think it is a downgrade Would that be because our run game has been so great the last couple of years since JG has been here or because of all the great running back commits he has recruited? I don't think at this point anyone could really know if it is an upgrade or a downgrade but it wouldn't hurt for you to let them hope for the best without trying to bring them down with all the negative talk
