Admissions decisions for regular students are normally made by April or May at the latest, right? I would guess (and I do not know) that admissions decisions for student-athletes are generally made prior to the date they can sign scholarship papers, which would have been February.
Hopefully, he was made aware that there was a possibility he would not be admitted and was working with the admissions department, but wanted to go to Florida enough that he was willing to take a calculated risk that it wouldn't work out.
If that's the case, then everything is above-board and fine. If admissions was quiet, and just recently sprung this on him, then that was wrong.
