Vols lament lost opportunity

    STARKVILLE, Miss. — Fighting for four quarters is no longer the issue for the Tennessee football team. Finishing games is now the problem. And it remains a big problem.

  • Patterson is heck of a player and playing him at RB is wise. Now I still didn't notice Hunter kid anywhere on that field tonite oh wait caught first pass of game then was shutout. Did Bray play against Bama last year?

  • Dooley blames the team for not picking of the 3rd downs but look at the play calling....3rd and 1 throw it 30 yards down the field...twice. Hunter is not committed to making a tough catch. If he hears footsteps, he isn't going to take a chance. On a positive note, I was surprised to see Young run the ball so well.

    You are exactly right about the 3rd down calls on offense. I also see the same thing on defense. For example, on the last drive (also several times in the game) CSS blitzed on third and not 2nd. When you have a young secondary and the other team is in third and long, the correct play is to rush 3 and drop 8. Make a not so good QB for Miss St. fit the ball in. When TN blitzes it leaves LB and young secondary 1-on-1. Easy picking all night lonnnnnnnnnnggggg.

  • Yeah, I was very disappointed in the third and short play calls. Unless you are definitely planning to go for it on fourth down, you have to be conservative on the third and short play calls. I think coaches that do the unexpected thing in that circumstance dream of how the announcers will call them such geniuses if it works. And hey, if you're UP by a score (preferably two), and at home, then it's a good idea. When you are down in the second half on a foreign field, that's a bad call. I think we should have told our O line we believe in them, maybe brought in the beast package, (especially with Neal out), and run it up the gut, TWICE if necessary. 4th and 1 or 4th and half a yard on the other teams 40 is not absurdly risky when you've been pounding them. Sure, they might have got the stop and a big momentum shift for them, but that's not as big and pointless a risk as heaving it long on 3rd and 1.

  • I have just posted the tickets (4 Games) I have remaining for this season for sale on Stubhub. I just can not continue to spend Thousands of Dollars a year to watch this mediocrity. I believe that Derek Dooley is an Upstanding citizen and a great role model, just simply not a very good coach. The University needs to offer him the VFL position and find our football team a coach. Money is tough to come by these days for everyone, including the UT Athletic department and like the economy unless there is a change in leadership we will continue getting what we have gotten the past 3 years! GOOD LUCK & GBO!!

  • Dear Coach Dooley,

    I have supported and defended you the last few years in hopes you would be able to turn things around. It's become painfully obvious you're incapable of such a task. I thank you for getting us some talent and depth, but I curse you for making my Saturdays less enjoyable and more stressful with each passing year. We've been forced to endure 5 years of subpar football (3 of which under your watch). Miss St was your last chance. You failed. I will not support you any longer. Time for you to go!

  • I say what ever the cost bring back Chavis! Head coach defense just what ever he wants because our defense has been horrible since he has left and LSU has been tops in the nation!! Do like Bama do what ever it takes!

  • OK, I have had enough of the negative talk. Please don't get offended, my intent is to bring some sense back to this problem. First, putting tickets on stubhub doesn't do anything but harm. Second, this team wins when they are supposed to win and loses when they are supposed to lose. This will get better and they WILL win. Third, calls to fire Dooley over this game is ridiculous. Yrs, it was a BIG game, but think to yourself for just a minute. A decision to fire a coach over the results of just this game is wrong. That is how we get into situations like these to begin with. You all know what I am talking about. Here is what I propose: why don't we all do what we can to support this team? Selling your tickets so half the stadium is crimson next week is crazy. Nothing but negativity. What will our recruits think? I'm not happy with this situation, but I don't want my actions to contribute negatively to an already bad situation. If don't want your tickets, give them to me and I will ensure someone wearing orange is in them and not the other way around.

  • The defense is just not SEC caliber. You can't give up 129 points in three games and expect to win them (not in the SEC). I think the offense played fairly well tonight - considering they were not on the field very much. Even for this offense, if the expectation is that they have to score Every time ET have the all or they suck, that is unrealistic. Having said all this, I am not sure what to do next.

  • for what its worth they had the right play call on 3rd and short but its Brays call to check it down in that situation and he didnt why blame the coach the qb has got to do a better job of finding the open player to pick up these third and short situations i'm also an avid Vols fan and always will be yeah i was dissappointed as well but i also believe this team will be a force next yr and as i stated if Dooley is fired everyone leaves that has the chance to and i hope i'm wrong but time will tell

    Volbol, I see where everyone is coming from. I really do. I just don't support the bashing, blaming and passive agressive attitudes. Ask yourself, are the actions you are taking (such as selling your tickets on stubhub to possibly go to the other teams fans) gonna make one bit of difference except just hurt the program more? I, for one, beleive that our team needs our support now more than ever. And, to the negative posters on this thread, what would you have said if we had won last night? Would that have changed your mind, or would you had thought that way anyway? I beleive we all know the answer to that question. So, it really is about the last game when it all comes down to it. I do understand it perfectly. We have a very short attention span. Patience is hard to come by these days. Unless we can go out and hire Nick Saban, keeping Dooley is our best option. If we are really talking about the entire body of work here, we would make our decision at some predetermined point in time, say at the end of a year. We wouldn't make the decision at the last snapshot (or game in this instance). See what I mean? We may win every game from here on out. Who knows? What would you think then? I am starting to confuse myself now, so I'll leave you thinking about that one.

  • I have been patient for 11 months......
    We need some type of injection, some enthusiasm and confidence to our team and our program. Currently, the only thing exciting is , guessing which facet of our team will implode and give us another moral victory. I at least expect to see us knowing how to line-up and fixing the same mistakes we see week after week (especially after having a bye week)
    Freeze has Ole Miss playing with passion and confidence......They are so improved over last year... Even after blowing a huge lead to A&M. he has that team playing with confidence.... Sumlin ( even with no defense) has A&M ranked and has only lost once, partially because he brings a winning attitude.
    So I don't think bringing in a new staff, would set us back years..... Who knows which way it would affect us for sure.... But I believe, with the current coach in place, we will be nothing more than a mediocre team for years to come. Our recruiting class for next year isn't that impressive at the moment either. I would have settled for an 8-4 year this year....Now I'm worried about 7-5 or 6-6.... Look at our remaining schedule and tell me how many teams we have left that you would bet your paycheck on and not worry.
    Its just hard to get excited about this team right now....and I'm tired of being positive only to be let down,,,week after week and year after year.
