Vols make impression on Henry

Five-star athlete Derrick Henry of Yulee, Fla., took an official visit to Tennessee this weekend for the Vols' home game against rival Florida. Where do they stand now?

  • We NEED him or Green. Both would be huge, similar to Ronnie Brown and Cadillac Williams at Auburn in the early/mid 2000's.

  • Also, Henry needs to realize the opportunity he has to come in and immediately be the guy on Rocky Top, running behind 4 very experienced O-Lineman - we should only lose Thomas, and keep Tiny, James, Stone, Fulton.

At Bama, he is either going to wind up at LB, or be buried on the depth chart under three or four other studs with a year or more already in the system.

I like his confidence that he can go in there and do good things right away, but even Trent Richardson had to wait his turn before he was the guy.

  • Well that at least heartening to hear, still don't know that we'll flip him, but you never know. Bama has several quality RB's playing now. I'd say the biggest thing that will keep Henry from flipping is the "hot seat" discussion that im sure is going to be hurrled at our Vols all season until we put it to rest with some quality wins. He'll likely verbal to Bama, but with a successful season I bet we could flip him by signing day.

  • With Alabama's and Georgia's current stable of RBs, how could any high school kid think he will be the go to guy next year? Love his confidence but somebody in his camp needs to feed him some reality.

  • I would think that his best opportunity to play would be with us. But, losses like yesterday's, isn't gonna help influence any top prospect to switch from their #1 choice to UT.

  • But you have to add, playing in front of 100,000+ screaming Vol fans is sure a big plus.

  • You gotta see it from his perspective though. He's not a fan, sitting there thinking about whether he's going to be "elated" or "devastated" by the win or loss. He's a prospect considering how he could fit in. And he's a confident kid thinking, "If I was in there I might break that one. I might have taken that one to the house. And this insane crowd would still be cheering and tearing down the goal posts."

Or at least, that's my best guess at what may have been going through his mind based on what he said. Wouldn't it be a nice silver lining if one of the most painful losses we've suffered actually HELPED our case with some of these recruits?

True, it's unlikely, but you never know how your fortunes might turn when it comes to recruiting. A few years ago we had three solid years of supposedly stellar recruiting that netted us Eric Berry and a couple of decent starters. The end result was a program in shambles with more 4 and 5 star "busts" than anyone could have imagined. In the same way, we all believed that a big win over FL would give us great momentum with all these high profile recruits visiting. Sure would be nice if by some miracle the opposite actually turned out to be true. (Yeah, eternal optimist..)

  • If being "THE GUY" right away was his top priority then he would go to Vandy or 50 other schools that lacks RB talent. But he's looking at Alabama with a stud true freshman. That means he is looking at his prospects of playing on Sunday and where he can get coached up. Trent Richardson backed up Mark Ingram for two years yet Richardson still finished in the Heisman race, high 1st round pick, didn't get beat up in college and won 2 National Championships.

I think this guy has got that "reality check" one guy mentioned and that's exactly the reason he's leaning toward Alabama.

You are right TR had to wait a year (not really, because he played while Ingram was still at Bama).......but look where TR is now...raking in big bucks, and having a great year ........plus the NC he was invloved in...........be smart DH............RTR.......Psalm 109:v8
