Vols move up on Henry's list

Five-star athlete Derrick Henry of Yulee, Fla., visited Tennessee this week for the third time in four months, and he says the Vols again improved their standing with him.

  • He is such a stud.

Did I read correctly - he was on campus for 4 days?? Sounds like he's really using these camps and visits to get better as a player.

  • Going straight from DawgNight a couple days ago to Tennessee's camp and then saying he likes us better . . . ? Shoot, makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

  • We never know what fate has in store for us. Mr Henry might be a Vol after all. Coach Graham is worth his weight in gold.

  • I like it. This seems to be evolving into a Bama/UT battle and I'm glad he's waiting for the season to play out.

He needs to be in the house on Oct. 20.

  • I have rarely seen a potential turning point as big as this season is shaping up to be. If the VOLS come out of the gate strong this year I believe they will reap the rewards in recruiting. That would make Henry, Bell and many others more likely to sign on the dotted line in February.

You raise an interesting point. If you're Tennessee, would you want him to visit that weekend or some other time? If the Vols were to lose to Alabama, which is obviously a possibility, would that hurt UT's chances?

I see your point. My take is that he'll know about the outcome of the game either way. Having him there, though, will let him see campus and Neyland at its absolute best.

Mid-late October is as beautiful as it gets, and as you well know, there's always an extra buzz in the air for that game. I think you let him experience the fan base in full tilt, see the fall colors on campus and watch one of the best rivalries in the sport.

He's not dumb and he understands that Alabama is in a different place in the competitive life-cycle.

Not to mention, if we win he'll get to see Knoxville go into complete nuclear meltdown. That'd be something he'll never forget in his life.

Yep. Unfortunately high risk and high reward are in play here.

If we were to have a very unfortunate season that resulted in more staff turnover, it could set us back considerably.

My money is on us capitalizing on the available rewards. I think we're going to have a solid year at least...possible a very special one.

  • I remember another RB from Fl with the last name Henry making a big impact on the Vols.

  • I lil this young man and I can see exactly why both Dooley and Sanan appeal to him and vice versa. He is very detail oriented just like the two coaches. The way he is approaching his recruit is admirable. No hasty decisions, a full and thorough examination of every bit on information he can get. I like that.

  • Watching his film the only person who comes to my mind is Hershel Walker, just bigger and faster than anybody ive seen film on, didn't think in this day and age of super athletes I would see that type of dominence. Daddy Dooley landed Hershel so maybe son can do the same with Derrick. Stay on him Jay and Tiny and win some games this year and I think we have a really good shot at him.

  • I think he will remain committed to Bama until he see what kind of season we are having. I don't really think the Bama game will swing him one way or the other. That'd be a rash decision and he obviously is taking his time and doing his due diligence in selecting the school he attends. Just imagine this though in regards to the Bama game. We lose a close one late on a heart breaking fumble returned by Bama to take the lead and win. We all know it could happen, Bama's Defense would be going ape nuts to strip the ball if we are leading late. We go on to finish 9-3, losing to GA, Bama and SC. We compete and lose each of those games late for various reasons. Henry will see the potential of an SEC championship game and early playing time. Worst I see us finishing is 7-5. Regardless of Wins and Losses, we need to Win a Bowl Game too and to get that chance we need to start off with a big game against NC State. Nothing guaranteed

Henry isn't committed to Alabama right now.

I'll second that. I'm a believer that Henry is a game changer and would make the Vols very strong in the running game. I'm also a believer that Coach Graham already has. GO VOLS!

  • Ryan I see your point about the crowd having so many Bama fans and that was talked about even after the game. Consider that two years ago by the Alabama game the air had been taken out of the season for UT. (I think that's one of the games where Bray was inserted in towards the end). Fans didn't show up for that game so Bama fans were able to get tickets.
Let's say UT is 5-1 or 4-2 by the Bama game, I doubt Bama fans will be as conspicuous in the crowd. (That's my optimistic side coming out). I know Henry will have certain weekends he can visit so this may all be a moot point. All the same it's fun to hypothesize.
