Vols offer former Auburn commit

A three-star athlete from Elkton, Md., received an offer from Tennessee on Monday, just hours after he decommitted from Auburn, and he's already interested in the Vols.

Why do you like this kid? We already have all the 3 stars we need, and if Auburn liked this kid after the last couple of years they have "enjoyed" then I am not sure I like him!

  • I think the positives are the 20 offers, his speed, and how quickly the staff reached out to him suggesting he is a priority.

Assuming Camion is out, we have a huge need at WR.

  • I don't know much about these prospects. But in Jones presser he said he would go after people with the specific "player make-up". Is this,it? 3 stars, 5'10, 180 lbs? He and jenkins both... Would it not make more sense to get a taller corner to cover 6'4" receivers we're up against.... Jmo...

Was going to hear confirmation on Tee this morning.

  • He's a 3 star db, not a wr, who is ranked 579th im America. What's exciting about that

  • Too many people are wrapped up in the # of stars a kid has by his name...if a coach can "coach", then stars are meaningless...

I disagree, thats like saying there is no such thing as natural talent. Eric Berry was coached, but he had natural talent. Some kids are more athletically gifted than others. You are saying that if you have someone with no athletic ability who was coached as well as someone with naturally more athleticism than most, the end result would be the same. Your logic is flawed, and I respectfully disagree. Thats why they have a saying "you can't teach that" the number of stars matters. Thats why when you have all star, all american players, its special. Your mannings, berrys, wilsons, grahams, lattimores, greens etc.,

It's like taking 2 stock cars, one being a civic with 114 hp, the other being a skyline with 230 hp. Putting top of the line after market parts on them "suping them up" with the best upgrades available and saying they will be equal. Thats rediculous

  • So what are the chances we are using this kid as a stepping stone to a bigger fish? One of his teammates, Kenny Bigelow, is a 5 star DT committed to SoCal. The new staff is at least getting UT in the mind of some bigger recruits at that school.

Not all kids get evaluated by the same people. Some may only get one look and may have a bad or just average game while being evaluated. It happens. So the natural talent thing could apply to a 3* also. A coach may look at tape and say "That kid may only be a 3*, but he has a lot of talent." The list of superstar NFL players that were 3* or lower is too long to go into again on this board, but there are many. Yes, 5* players are typically good, but not a sure thing. UT has missed on several 5* players in the last several years. So much more goes into selecting good players for a coaches system than just the number of stars.

  • WVU has been pressing him hard but it appears he is looking for "bigger" offers. It seems that WVU is just a fall back plan. The Mountaineers currently have 2 commitments from his teammates but that doesn't appear to have any influence on JIS decision. If he doesn't come to WVU I hope he ends up in Knoxville.

JIS has been a 3 star recruit since his JR season and due to issues with his school he didn't have a senior season. Without the ability to play games he obviously didn't have an opportunity to have a senior tape evaluated.

  • There were SEVERAL 3 star starters on Saban's first Bama championship team. And there are MANY 3 and 2 star guys playing in the NFL right now. There are also LOTS of 4 and 5 star guys that NEVER see the light of day in college or pros. Just sayin'............

Yep, but why doesn't Saban have a lot of 3-and 4-star players now? Answer: Because it is always better to start with 4- and 5- star recruits, not because of the stars but because (all things being equal) a higher percentage of them are likely to be excellent.

Not saying coaching doesn't make a huge difference, because it does. But there's a formula for that.

Average talent + excellent coaching = above average player
Excellent talent + excellent coaching = excellent player
