Vols' search changing course

  • He is having a press conference in 6.5 hours to talk about his new raise and whatever other commitments Jurich made to him to get him to stay.

    JPSke

  • You know those guys that get kicked in the jibblets over and over again for fun on YouTube? <------ Smarter than those thinking Gurden will ever walk the sidelines in Knoxville (unless we get an NFL franchise).

If Fulmer didn't lose his edge, why was he never hired to be head coach somewhere else? He may have been on the way to a good class for 2009, but he'd had 2 losing seasons of his last 4. '07 was a good year when he went to the SEC Champ game, but '08 & '05 weren't.

I will say that Fulmer's worst season 3-5 SEC records look a lot better than where we are today. I just question whether or not Fulmer could rebuild the program from where it is now. Remember when he was hired in '92 he took over a team from Majors that was routinely 9-3 or 10-2. He never as a head coach rebuilt a program from the state our's is in today.

With all due respect, why is it that you and all other "Anti-Fulmer" people harp over his 2 losing seasons out of 17 years? "2 out of the last 4"... but let's ignore the fact that the years surrounding those 2 loses were 10-3, 10-3, 9-4, and 10-4!?!? Look people, the guy had 2 bad years, GET OVER IT! Majors had FIVE 6 or less win seasons; Nick Saban had THREE! Since when is TENNESSEE too good to have a coach that is 152-52? But hey, he had those two losing seasons! Look, I don't care who we hire as long as we return to the proud Tennessee we once were, but it is thinking like this that has us at the sad place we are at now in TN history.

People we won 1, that's ONE sec game this year! We have been repeatedly turned down, and I'm not talking just about this search. Remember how we ended up with Dooley? All the while we are at the point to were we are pimping out our coaching job to anybody who will listen. I mean come on. I like Charlie Strong and I like Fedora, but when you are 3 or more down on your list and we are willing to make them one of the top paid coaches in the nation just to get them to come, that's desperation. WTF WE ARE TENNESSEE!! If you can't bring in your fourth attempt at hiring a coach without paying them "Nick Saban" money, then we need to bring back the one man that actually wants to be here! Will he win? Heck I don't know, but if we lose at least we know he will be right there hurting with us, not on a plane to Cali. Ok sorry rant over. GO VOLS!

  • I think Tressell has a long show-cause penalty.

    supersmo18

  • Jim Mora Jr. out of the picture? Are there any candidates out there that would take the job rather than playing a leverage game at their current position for more money? Disgusting to see our program not be thought of or relevant.

  • The is getting so depressing. Roman is only one on the list that i pray we would consider. All the others will send me into deep depression. I cant believe we have dropped down to this level of coaches. I would go 1 more time for Gruden then Roman or Fulmer. I will always love the orange but those other coaches will never contend for the SEC here i dont think. I was so excited when dooley was fired and now i cant sleep and my stomach is in knots. This is helping me with my diet atleast. I have lost 48 lbs. Just need to lost 32 more to reach my goal!

  • Dave Hart better not even think about bringing Bo Pelini to Tennessee. Absolutely not.

    TNCodes

  • Thanks, Wes. Go Vols!

    Uncle Keath

  • Fulmer was .325 against the top 25 his last 6-7 years. Why would you want to go backwards again? When Florida, Bama, SC, etc. fans want you to rehire Fulmer, what does that tell you? Everything you hear are just rumors and speculation. Hart isn't talking

This is pathetic. Hart screwed this up so bad. He has NO plan now. Should've hired a search firm, would've weeded out all the crap. I'm embarrassed and we deserve better than this...

    Butch Davis
    Jim Tressel
    Kirby Smart

I'd be thrilled with any of those 3 at this point.

I'd rather have Jim Leavitt than these guys..Maybe a few of the players need a good smack to wake em up on defense anyway. South Fl was tough as hell back when he was their coach and they may have been the best team in Fl at one time. And I'm a VOLFAN all the way but
he's as good as the guys mentioned here I
think but hell what do I know. Gruden would
be the man but it looks pretty grim..

  • omg stop with the gruden crap i know most people think he is the greatest thing in the world but fooling with him was a waste of time in the first place he is not intrested in colledge football

    lebronb

  • And stop with the Fulmer crap as well. He!!, if you want to go backwards, rehire Majors

    Shipperman

  • Man, this is depressing, AND embarrassing! I say we had better try talking to Gruden one more time (without Cheek involved). If he turns us down again, then go after Petrino. I`m sure he would be given a warning about any more mistakes if he got the job. Don`t know what this would do for recruiting, but we`re running out of options! I say forget Butch Jones. He was one of the few coaches Dooley won against. And, drop the talk about hiring Fulmer back. Alabama, Florida, and the rest of the SEC would love that!

  • I would talk to Kirby Smart. I'd rather have someone like him who is an awesome dc and recruits great talents. i do believe he will be a great head coach someday. Maybe this is that day.

  • The problem is that you guys keep thinking TN is a premier program. Get over it!!! At best you are the sixth best program in the SEC. TN would get rolled in the big east. The arrogance that this search started and continues with just blows me away. Hey I hear there is a Kiffiin going to be looking for a job in a couple weeks!!! Lol. UNC is three times the college town and school UT is even on probation and Strong woke up and said what the hell was I thinking. If you had any sense you would have hired Petrino in week one. Absolutely the best coach on the board from the beginning. Sure he cheated on his wife but one winning season and that is all forgotten and the recruiting gates open. What a bunch of foolish people to think you are so much better than everyone else. If you work hard you might find a coach before Northern Illinois does.

  • Not sure I will ever understand Dave Hart's infatuation with Fisher and Gundy. Obviously they are great coaches, but there was no way in hell they were ever going to leave their current jobs. Wasting that 2+ weeks hurt us bad. With that said, I get back from my deployment in September. Chaney can coach the first couple of games, and then I'll be ready!

All joking aside, Butch Davis has always been one of my top choices. So lock him up, Hart!

    BostonVol

  • Absolutely sick of watching them try to land proven head coaches from other universities(how's that worked out). I think I read somewhere it cost UL over 4 mil to keep Charlie Strong, I like him but he's just not worth that kind of money. The next list should contain names that absolutely have been chasing UT. From articles on here and other news sites it seems the only person that fits that bill is Greg Roman. Supposedly the guy owns property somewhere close to Knoxville. For everyone that has to have a current head coach, how's that worked out so far. For everyone that says no absolutely not to a coordinator, how's that worked out for Florida. Let's go get Roman.

    darrenozratc

  • Petrino. Only logical choice left. He would be a winner quickly. Every momma loves a ball coach that done his woman wrong, realized his sinful way, confessed, was born again and now lives at the foot of the cross. I tell you, if that guy can coach, and this one can, go get him. He wins 7 games his first year and 50% of the saints of Tennessee will forgive him. Win 8 games his second year and the state will knight him and declare him protector of the Vols. Win 9 or more and 100% of the fans will declare him a saint and wonder what all the fuss was about. If the whole thing explodes, you are simply back where you are now. It is a no brainer.

  • I agree with going out and getting the best option possible. Get Hart and Cheeky off the "trying to find anyone in the country who likes football to come and coach Tennessee", oh i mean a good head coach with great credintials. Get Haslaam to give JON GRUNDEN a blank check and end this shit.

It is making our University look terrible and further degrading the Tennessee brand that has been created over 100 years of football by two fumbling idoits. (Hart and Cheeky).

The money and the splash that would be created by Gruden would be unparralled in college football. Would also help this recruiting class out, because we only have like 9 days left to recruit. I don't think if you tried to mess up you could have done this bad. Hell take out an Ad on monster.com or something like that, surely there are some High School coaches out there that might want to come to UT, Maryville coach???

Ha that is light years what we have had.......do you remember what fooley's winning percentage was against the top 25??? Hiring Fulmer would be a step in the right direction.....not backwards. (oh in case you didn't remember fooley's winning percentage against the top 25 was .000%)

I'm guessing that you live in the North and haven't ever been to a UT game. Or if you have it has only been one in the last like 5-8 years. There was a time when UT was a great universtity where winning was an all the time thing. We didn't build a 100,000+ stadium because we suck. And UNC is an effing joke and not a college football town, i've been there. They have just started to win football games there, besides the last couple years they have been duke.....(a doormat) losing basically every game they have ever played.

  • Well I wake up this A.M. to read this depressing recap of yesterday's fiasco, nat'l embarrassment, or whatever you want to call it. I said it before in one of the many Gruden threads...Hart was loosing the PR battle over 2 weeks and now he has officially lost the war of public perception no matter what he does @ this point. There's nothing, absolutely nothing, he can do @ this point to repair the damage that has been done...short of some white knight/miracle hire (anyone on the radar??). It's becoming abundantly clear that leadership incompetence (i.e. Cheek's involvement in this process?) is a factor in this complete mess. It's also crystal clear that a reorg of the highest levels of the administration must take place...aka, Cheek you're fired!

Back to coach search. Like most of us, I'm clueless on what's next. We are left w/little more than less than desirable options. I know there are good/decent coaches out there, BUT, we needed a GREAT coaching hire. Anybody else is going to be considered a last resort hire...don't care how much lipstick you try to put on this PIG of a situation, that is what it is. The new coach will know it, the fans certainly know it, the nat'l sports press knows it, and hopefully the boosters know it.

So I'm off to work and will watch with amazement the continuing & embarrassing saga of "How the UT Coaching Search Turns".

  • I believe we are at the fork in the road and need to take it. I think it was Swain that tweeted last night that the answer lives in Maryville and we need to go get him in a limo. His former players seem behind this move and several boosters do as well. This time next week I hope he's "working like heck for Tennessee." Just think we'd get a Hall of Fame coach with a helluva w/l record, SEC championships, an NCAA championship, a boat load of players in the NFL, backed completely by Peyton Manning. This candidate is completely loyal to UT and would never tarnish our reputation. What else are we looking for?
