Vols' search changing course

  • mlm said...

Well I wake up this A.M. to read this depressing recap of yesterday's fiasco, nat'l embarrassment, or whatever you want to call it. I said it before in one of the many Gruden threads...Hart was loosing the PR battle over 2 weeks and now he has officially lost the war of public perception no matter what he does @ this point. There's nothing, absolutely nothing, he can do @ this point to repair the damage that has been done...short of some white knight/miracle hire (anyone on the radar??). It's becoming abundantly clear that leadership incompetence (i.e. Cheek's involvement in this process?) is a factor in this complete mess. It's also crystal clear that a reorg of the highest levels of the administration must take place...aka, Cheek you're fired!

Back to coach search. Like most of us, I'm clueless on what's next. We are left w/little more than less than desirable options. I know there are good/decent coaches out there, BUT, we needed a GREAT coaching hire. Anybody else is going to be considered a last resort hire...don't care how much lipstick you try to put on this PIG of a situation, that is what it is. The new coach will know it, the fans certainly know it, the nat'l sports press knows it, and hopefully the boosters know it.

So I'm off to work and will watch with amazement the continuing & embarrassing saga of "How the UT Coaching Search Turns".

I work in Birmingham with all my Tennessee stuff out for everybody to see. Not looking forward to today. And it's not even football season for us anymore. Wow! i just keep thinking aobut the sorry state of University of Tennessee.

I believe we are at the fork in the road and need to take it. I think it was Swain that tweeted last night that the answer lives in Maryville and we need to go get him in a limo. His former players seem behind this move and several boosters do as well. This time next week I hope he's "working like heck for Tennessee." Just think we'd get a Hall of Fame coach with a helluva w/l record, SEC championships, an NCAA championship, a boat load of players in the NFL, backed completely by Peyton Manning. This candidate is completely loyal to UT and would never tarnish our reputation. What else are we looking for?

I have a picture of he and I up in my office so I say "Go get him!!"

  • has he led team to nat champ - check
has he re-built a formerly prominent program that was very down back to glory - check
is he a defense first coach - check
can he get a great staff - check
is he a coach players respect but also play for - check
can he recruit - like a mother f...er - check
The only guy that even came close on all of these - Butch Davis. hire him. should have been top of the list to begin with. his only issue is the NC stuff. Hart - earn your money and you manage the compliance.

Wes- Do you really think Tuberville would be a better hire than bringing back Fulmer?

Tuberville's record against Nick Saban and Les Miles is much better than Fulmer's so yes I do

  • Get in the real world there never is many good coaches that want to leave a job they have. Saban's record at Michigan State over four years would have UT fans deserting ship if he was hired. But LSU say something else and those in charge of hiring know more than arm chair quareterbacks coaches like you.

  • You obviously have never hired anyone or in a mgmt role. You hate Hamilton and now you are critical of hart. Stop complaining or go cheer for anywhere team.

    Rob34x3

  • Hart is embarrassing UT by chasing coaches around and getting turned down! He should seek the ones that WANT the job, obviously money doesnt always rule!

Tressel way before Davis on every single count. Go check the numbers.

  • I really don't think the Coaching search has been quite the "dumpster fire" it's being portrayed by many as being, Gruden was a stretch at best, Gundy was never a real possibility, and Strong obviously turned out to be a really loyal man; good for him, good for Louisville, but we have plenty of top flight candidates who can win big at Tennessee.

    1. Butch Davis would be an excellent hire if he has been cleared by the NCAA as is being reported. To my knowledge he has not been implicated in the institution(s) that have run afoul of NCAA "complications"?

    2. Tommy Tuberville is a proven SEC class Head Coach, we could do MUCH worse.

    3. Butch Jones is regarded pretty highly by football people who are paid to evaluate football people.

    4. Bobby Petrino is going to win somewhere, and he would certainly know that the University would be watching. A Zero-tolerance policy and opportunity for redemption could be strong motivators

    5. Larry Fedora, but only if we know he's coming before we offer?

Whoever we reach out to, we need to make the next one sticks before perception becomes reality and we end down where we fear we are heading to...

    GO VOLS!

  • I want Larry Fedora, he is a very good recruiter and knows the south. I wanted him more than Charlie Strong.

This was my first choice to begin with.

    TWEED

  • Before yall go jumping off bridges like all the other sheep UT fans - just remember two of the most successful football coaches of the past decade were not their schools first choice. Saban was Bama's third choice, and Carroll was USC's FOURTH choice.

I'm not saying we'll land a coach that successful, but it's silly and juvenile to assume we're doomed just because 2 coaches turned us down. There are still PLENTY of other coaches out there that can do a hell of a job.

    How bout John Chavis?

He has said multiple times in the past that he has no desire to be a head coach. Of course that may have changed, but I doubt it. All I know is that when the pressure is on for my job, and I gotta get something done, I don't sleep as I am working on things. Wonder how Hart/Cheek slept last night? Just curious....

drizz..you got me on the Strong bandwagon and the wheels came off.. I like that you are mentioning tressel now, though. Plenty of room onboard that train!

Tressel is under a "show Cause" penalty. Why do people continue to bring him up? Why would UT (already under sanctions) try to hire a coach who would bring further scrutiny and penalties to the program? Tressel being mentioned is ridiculous!

  • Are we looking at getting Fulmer back? If Hart wants a proven coach, he has one right under his nose

  • Should anyone be surprised ? What a F* up..................Today is a sad day for this UT alum.

So far it's fail fail fail, just sign Butch Davis and lets get a proven winner with baggage and see if it works.

Sorry but if you want a proven winner with baggage: Tressel is the man. His record is so much better than Davis' its not even a contest.

This is pathetic. Hart screwed this up so bad. He has NO plan now. Should've hired a search firm, would've weeded out all the crap. I'm embarrassed and we deserve better than this...

Butch Davis Jim Tressel Kirby Smart

I'd be thrilled with any of those 3 at this point.

Why do you keep preaching Tressel. The man has a 5 year show cause penalty!

    SWVolfan

  • Your sanctimony is the only thing thats ridiculous. Tressel is a proven winner. Have you looked at his record?

  • I gotta say that if youre willing to put Davis and Petrino on your list then you really can't leave Tressel off it. He's achieved more as a head coach at a major program than Davis and Petrino combined. And his sins are no worse; in fact I would say that he's shown more loyalty than either.
