Vols' search changing course

  • Said before if the fan base can forgive and forget, here are choices
    Fulmer
    Petrino
    Tuberville

    They all want opportunity to show they can be winner, all won in past, Fulmer is respected and loved by many..short term contract with designated coach in waiting say a young smart coordinator

    Man, this is depressing, AND embarrassing! I say we had better try talking to Gruden one more time (without Cheek involved). If he turns us down again, then go after Petrino. I`m sure he would be given a warning about any more mistakes if he got the job. Don`t know what this would do for recruiting, but we`re running out of options! I say forget Butch Jones. He was one of the few coaches Dooley won against. And, drop the talk about hiring Fulmer back. Alabama, Florida, and the rest of the SEC would love that!

    Go hire Petrino.

I've been saying to anyone who would listen that you cannot approach this as if you were any other employee, where you gather resume's, do interviews of various people and tell each of them "well, we are interested in you, but we are continuing our search and will advise you if we want to hire you.." You arent hiring a secretary for god's sake. You are hiring a head football coach at UT. You decide who you want and you come out swinging agressively. The day after Dooley is fired, if Hart gets on a plane and walks into Strong's office and says, "Charlie, you are my first stop. We want you. How much will it take? What's that, it will take $4 mill? Tell you what, here's 5 million.." you think Strong turns him down then? I think probably not. Now quit messing around and go find the best coach out there and keep writing zeroes on the check until the guy says "yes".

  • Shocker! The same fans who got so excited over fantasy hires are now surprised and saddened that those fantasy hires said no. I understand taking a shot at Jon Gruden (it's an expectation during coaching searches), but the rational fans knew it was never happening.

    Charlie Strong should've been the first option, without a doubt. I mean, seriously, Jimbo Fisher, Mike Gundy, Bob Stoops? What made anyone at Tennessee think those guys would be interested?

    Lots of excellent coaches that want this job, we just got our hopes up over the ones that didn't.

    Haha what has Hart done wrong? Gruden was never really gonna come, Strong has morals (good for him and those kids). Hart is being smart about this...who has Tennessee officially offered? Strong is the only one I believe...everyone was pissed when we weren't "making the tens at the bar turn us down" Gundy wasn't offered the job and Strong turned us down...that is all that has happened, all the stoops and Fisher crap was never an option, who was the last big name coach at a big name university to leave that established program to make a lateral move? Everyone clam down because getting upset over a possible lie is truly the most insane asinine thing I have ever seen lol

  • I agree with tnmiles and believe sometimes we want too much too quick. It isn't like those pursued so far are the only talent that is available. In the end Hart will look like he made good decisions. The real truth will be the record the Vols has in 1, 2, 3 years from now under the coach he did hire.

  • Last night I posted a picture of Fulmer and it had a bold heading that read "Miss Me Yet?" Yes, I do miss him and feel that we would not even be close to where we are at right now, BUT should we hire him back??? No, I disagree with that and stole these stats from a post that backs up my personal thoughts on it. No other schools, at least any of any repute, have had any interest in him. He had a great run, but his last 4 years were atrocious:

    2005: 5-7, lost to Vandy, only beat UAB by 7 and Memphis by 4.

    2006: 17 point loss to Arkansas, 1 point win over Air Force, beat Kentucky by 5.

    2007: 2-TD loss to Cal, 59-20 loss to Florida, 41-17 loss to Bama, 1 point win over Vandy, got taken to OT by Kentucky.

    2008: 30-6 loss to Florida, lost to 5-7 Auburn, only beat 6-7 Northern Illinois by 4, 29-9 loss to Bama, 27-6 loss to So. Carolina, lost to Wyoming

    I don't know what's going to happen to our program. It may be like this for another few years, or we may get lucky. Here's to karma kicking us in the tail, and hopefully NOW we can say we have hit rock bottom. Time to start going up!! GBO!

    You know, I was thinking last night about what direction UT should go after Strong's rejection. I thought about the Ohio State situation, if you can't beat 'em then hire 'em (Meyer). So I thought about all the coaches that beat us while we were good. Obviously we won't get Spurrier or Snyder, but what about Frank Solich? He was solid at Nebraska before they ran him out (like Fulmer) and has done pretty well at Ohio, where he has no shot at getting top talent. He had a solid defense and we could retain most of the offensive staff.

    I really like the way Solich shrugged of the Husker thing and proceeded to build a very solid team at Ohio..Unfortunately Solich wouldn't be much of a recruiting force in the SEC..I follow Bobcat football and they had a total collapse in November which doesn't look good for Solich's coaching ability

  • Here is the biggest issue. Hart has failed his Athletic Director 101 course. Any great AD should always have his next coaching hire in his back pocket before pulling the trigger on firing a coach. It's not a formal arrangement, but a wink wink arrangement nonetheless. You may still go through a interview process for due diligence sake, but you know who your guy is and they are wrapped up and just waiting on the negotiation of the finer details. Hart either didn't have a guy...or he missed on what he "thought" he had. We will get a good coach, but it won't be a big name splash...the PR hit can not be undone. I would now expect a train of "not interested" announcements from the top tier prospects. Nobody wants to be that far down the list...egos get in the way.
