  • Bobby Petrino is the best coach out there. He has been from the get go. I can't understand why we don't hire him. Two years from now, we would have a 9 win season and a 10 win season. This is America---forgive the man and hire a coach that we can win with. Give him a incentive based contract, get a great defensive coordinator, bring back Tee Martin, keep Jay Graham and we are relevant again--immediately. Ask any program in the SEC--who they don't want us to hire and the will say Bobby Petrino. End of story.

That is just depressing as hell

I have to agree. It can't get much worse. We have missed on all of our top targets. I'm afraid we're gonna be left with a second rate coach once again.

Roman is Harbaughs right hand man. Go Getm

I wouldn't mind having Roman as our coach. I think he would do an outstanding job since he wants to be here the most.

I believe we are at the fork in the road and need to take it. I think it was Swain that tweeted last night that the answer lives in Maryville and we need to go get him in a limo. His former players seem behind this move and several boosters do as well. This time next week I hope he's "working like heck for Tennessee." Just think we'd get a Hall of Fame coach with a helluva w/l record, SEC championships, an NCAA championship, a boat load of players in the NFL, backed completely by Peyton Manning. This candidate is completely loyal to UT and would never tarnish our reputation. What else are we looking for?

I do see a little more motivation in the ole coach these days. Maybe the energy is back. He definitely lost the edge he Had in the roaring 90's. If it can happen in Kansas, could it possibly happen in Knoxville. You know what scares me the most? Regardless of who comes ,the vols are still rebuilding. It's going to take 3 to 4 yrs to do this. Probably 4 yrs is the real time frame. How will those Vols fans who don't wear big boy pants react? How will they treat a hall of fame coach then. I think I know and its kinda sad. But it's the world we live now...instant gratification .. Maybe it's best we don't hire him back.

drizz..you got me on the Strong bandwagon and the wheels came off.. I like that you are mentioning tressel now, though. Plenty of room onboard that train!

Jim Tressel is a great coach and a Knoxville native. What red flags does that bring to TN with the football cops?

The fact that he's on a show-cause ban.

WHY 4 years??? Where in the hell else does it take 4 years? Why does it have to take four years? What exactly are you basing this reasoning on. TN has deep talent on both sides of the line and experience and don't tell me they need time cause other coaches are having early success.. I mean holy heck Vandy is 8-4 after 2 years under Franklin!

  • Roman definitely knows the game well. He's a Harbaugh guy and was finalist at penn state this past year . If he wants our job then why not? I bet he would keep some of our staff and bring some nfl guys with him

  • The situation we are in right now is one of the big reasons I was a Dooley supporter. (until the Vandy game at least) The big question before Dooley was fired was, "who's can UT get that is better?" IMO we should have had a coach (or 2 or 3) lined up and ready to go before we let Dooley go.

Dooley (before Missouri and Vandy) had only lost to very good SEC teams. It also looked like the main problem was with the new 3-4 defense (which IMO needed another year or two to mature). Also, the offense was better than it has been for many years.

The problem now is that UT may not be in a better situation than it was and may very well be in a worse situation. The result is a $5 million golden parachute for Dooley, robbing academics of $15 million & massive payouts for the assistants in an already difficult financial situtation. All to start over with a guy who may not be any better than Dooley. Now we have to give a new guy another 3 year to get his recruits in and see if he can beat the SEC teams that are consistantly in the top 10. I'm generally optimistic in nature, but I just don't see this situation getting better for many years.

It looks like to get anyone who isn't a "diamond in the rough," UT is going to have to offer a record breaking contract which would make the new coach by far the highest paid coach in the nation. (assuming that UT even has that ability) (assuming that there is anyone even worthy of a record breaking contract)

  • I googled Roman and found him on wikipedia and it actually said interviewing for the UT head football coach. What the heck wiki has scooped everyone ;)

SPOT ON. Tennessee fans will have to accept 2013 will be tough, no matter who's wearing the headset on Saturdays: Away to Oregon and Florida in weeks 3 and 4 and a SEC gauntlet from Oct. 5 - Nov. 30.

If Petrino, Tuberville, Jones or any other candidate comes to Knoxville and goes 4-8 next season, will the sky be falling then, too?

  • Sad state of affairs when Butch "Don't call me Lyle" Jones is near the top of your list. Please give me the resume on this guy and why is he a good pick? Al Golden what is his claim to fame? This ship is going down fast. These are different times in a Show Me Now attitude in fans and recruits. I would take Coach Fulmer over these low 2nd and high 3rd tier coaches. Least you know what you got.

I'm looking at the big picture. Let's see Alabama won with Saban in the third year. Butch Davis won at Carolina the 4th year. Johnny Majors starting winning in the 4th year. I can promise you this list is long. My opinion is mine and i respect yours as well. But history doesn't lie. Move the high schools out of Fla to Tennessee and my reasoning will change.

Very real. It simply takes time to rebuild.
