SPOT ON. Tennessee fans will have to accept 2013 will be tough, no matter who's wearing the headset on Saturdays: Away to Oregon and Florida in weeks 3 and 4 and a SEC gauntlet from Oct. 5 - Nov. 30.

If Petrino, Tuberville, Jones or any other candidate comes to Knoxville and goes 4-8 next season, will the sky be falling then, too?

If we had hired Gruden, Tennessee fans would still be howling to fire him if his record dipped below .500.

The win now crowd considers anything other than Ws mere excuses.

The situation we are in right now is one of the big reasons I was a Dooley supporter. (until the Vandy game at least) The big question before Dooley was fired was, "who's can UT get that is better?" IMO we should have had a coach (or 2 or 3) lined up and ready to go before we let Dooley go.

Dooley (before Missouri and Vandy) had only lost to very good SEC teams. It also looked like the main problem was with the new 3-4 defense (which IMO needed another year or two to mature). Also, the offense was better than it has been for many years.

The problem now is that UT may not be in a better situation than it was and may very well be in a worse situation. The result is a $5 million golden parachute for Dooley, robbing academics of $15 million & massive payouts for the assistants in an already difficult financial situtation. All to start over with a guy who may not be any better than Dooley. Now we have to give a new guy another 3 year to get his recruits in and see if he can beat the SEC teams that are consistantly in the top 10. I'm generally optimistic in nature, but I just don't see this situation getting better for many years.

It looks like to get anyone who isn't a "diamond in the rough," UT is going to have to offer a record breaking contract which would make the new coach by far the highest paid coach in the nation. (assuming that UT even has that ability) (assuming that there is anyone even worthy of a record breaking contract)

Good post. It's a process wether we like it or not. We all need to understand that.

The problem is that you guys keep thinking TN is a premier program. Get over it!!! At best you are the sixth best program in the SEC. TN would get rolled in the big east. The arrogance that this search started and continues with just blows me away. Hey I hear there is a Kiffiin going to be looking for a job in a couple weeks!!! Lol. UNC is three times the college town and school UT is even on probation and Strong woke up and said what the hell was I thinking. If you had any sense you would have hired Petrino in week one. Absolutely the best coach on the board from the beginning. Sure he cheated on his wife but one winning season and that is all forgotten and the recruiting gates open. What a bunch of foolish people to think you are so much better than everyone else. If you work hard you might find a coach before Northern Illinois does.

you my friend are not very educated on this subject we are historically a top 3 SEC program. 5 years does not change that! Our facilities are still one of the very best in the country! I know we have been down, but to say we are 6th best job in SEC get out of here with that bro! Florida, Georgia, Alabama, LSU are the only jobs that you could say are better than ours. heck even dooley was able to out recruit south carolina once or twice. south carolina has only been good maybe 5 years out of the entire schools history lol! we are no longer a top 10 job in the country as we use to be but we are still top 20 and we would have been at least 8-4 in the big east bro! big east is terrible!

  • Greg Roman was a finalist at Stanford under Harbaugh for the best college football assistant coach. He was also a finalist for the Penn State job last year. He knows both tiers of football and that in itself is a recruiting tool. He's young and fiery and he wants our job. Let me as it again.... He has been quoted saying he would love the opportunity to coach in college and UT is a great university with an unbelievable fan base and tradition . Lets hire Roman... Of course of its not Gruden.

I don't think the news is that slow, just much harder to decipher. I personally think Hart has moved on to his next batch of coaches and is threatening death of first born to anyone that thinks about leaking any info right now. I would be surprised to find out he offers 5-6 coaches in the next few days without any of them knowing about the next one or previous one.

  • Raheem Morris needs to be considered! He is young has been a NFL head coach. He is currently a DB coach for the Redskins.

I was telling people the exact same thing today. Morris is highly respected and a head coaching position is about the only thing that can get him out of Washington after this season. The hush hush is that once the season is done, Jim Haslett is fired and Morris is the new DC for the Skins. Against STL in week 2, Mike Shannahan gave defensive play calling to Morris because he was the only coach that realized adjustments needed to be made when Sam Bradford is able to pick you secondary apart.

  • I really feel he would be a good fit!

  • apology needs to be given to Phillip Fulmer. I dont care what anyone says we would not have sunk this low had we not fired him. Karma sucks lol. Fulmer is a legen and bleeds orange he would never have knowingly done anything to hurt this university. we would not be on probation right now for sure! I miss him!

Why? He was a terrible head coach. Look at his record. Only lasted 3 years before he got canned. His record was 17-31

  • Hart apparently has his own agenda and it appears Cheek is allowing him to run without any rein at all with the conclusion being perhaps, he is doing his thing with very little input from anyone @ Tn or connected to TN.

    Really?

Charlie Strong would take the South Carolina job if offered right now.

He slapped ya'll in the face by sticking with Louisville.

    Let that sink in.

South Carolina, when the HC position opens up, is a much more desirable job than Tennessee.

BTW how'd those "better recruiting classes" work out for ya'll. Atleast 5 years before ya'll are relevant again. At which point High School kids will not have known the last time Tennessee was relevant.

Enjoy what few years you have left with Spurrier running the show. Once he leaves, USCe will return to its rightful place in the SEC...

  • How does this sound for a scenario:
    1. Fire Dave Hart and hire Phillip Fulmer to be AD and interim head coach for the season, with the understanding that there will be a new coach next year.
    2. Suck up a potentially horrible season.
    3. Start putting out feelers for new head coaches pretty much as soon as the season starts.
    4. Get the head coach you want, possibly arranged early in the season and announced the instant the regular season is over. Alternatively,
Fulmer pulls a Snyder, coaches for another couple of years, and we name a "coach in waiting" like FSU did with Jimbo Fisher.

This would be the equivalent of "punting" for another year, but the alternative is getting a mediocre coach who mires us in another 3 yrs of mediocrity and puts us back in the same position in 2015.

  • Has anyone else noticed that the picture associated with this article keeps changing. We have finally gotten to an image of Tuberville, who, in my opinion only, is next up on my list for current college coaches. I have to admit that I am becoming really interested in Roman and especially Mike Zimmerman with the Bengals. I'm pretty sure Roman wants the job and I think Zimmerman is the next big thing. He really knows how to coach a defense and if he can do it that well with all the convicts in Cincinnati, it's time for Tennessee to get a new warden.
