which is probably why you don't bring in a guy to revamp an offensive system that was one of the best in school history..

sorry..I'm REALLY trying to bite my tongue on this hire, dober, now that's its done, but its going to take some time.. I'll get there.

Any coach that was brought in to take over would change things up. Unless Chaney was hired as the HC there was going to be change. Like it or not, tennessee went 5-7 this year. Things need to change. Yes, the offense lit up the scoreboard, that doesn't mean that a new coach should come in and retain the entire staff. Remember how the offense looked last year and the year before?

As much as it sucks, you have to accept that change is happening. Doesn't matter how good the O was. Keeping Graham is a good step, but the likelihood of keeping more than 2 people was always slim. and, IMO, it makes sense to keep Hinshaw as the other given his recruiting. I like coach pittman and i think he's a fantastic O-line coach, but he may not be best for the new system.

I like what the players say about Pittman, but our run blocking went from the worst in the country to just average this year under Pittman with 4 three year starters and future NFL'er Richardson. I didn't really see many big holes against the good SEC competition. To my knowledge, he hasn't recruited UT any nationally sought after linemen (Sanders committed to Dooley before Pittman was even here) and the CAK lineman was a borderline recruit (I really wish him the best at UT, but he wasn't really offered by anyone else big was he?).

I think he has good rapport with his lineman, but I think his coaching is average at best and I'm going to trust coach Jones on this.

He sure outcoached Hiestand, who is the OL coach for #1 Notre Dame.

I'm not sure I would call 160 yds a game and 4.7 yds per attempt "average".. But given where we were, Pittman did an amazing job with just one year with the guys. And don't forget the pass blocking..we were close to the top in terms of fewest sacks allowed. What's more is the players in the trenches love the guy. You have to find a way to keep him, imho, irrespective of the scheme..

also, our run blocking was average this year. We ranked 64th in the country in rushing yards. When you have a passing attack like we had, you should definitely be able to run the ball better

  • I may be a little rusty on my facts. However, I am pretty sure that our O-line ranked top 5 in the nation in pass protect.

Coach Jones may have some connection of loyalty with Mahoney but, in my opinion. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Maybe Pittman isn't the ideal coach for Jones' spread?
In my opinion, before he starts messing with the Offensive staff. He should be focusing 76% of his efforts toward finding the best possible defensive staff with the money he can afford to offer.

8% of his time should be trying to secure Tee. If not more, if he is indeed battling Saban overTee.

10% Should be used for recruiting before the dead preiod.

6% should be dedicated to building and evaluating players and building his plan around their skill set, until he can get the recruits with the skill set he wants to run his schemes. #JustSayin

The OL coach is so important because they have to know how to teach the scheme...you dont want to have to teach the coach how to teach the system, it will allow for a quicker understanding of how to block it. Not worriwd if james bolts...first off it'd be a mistake by him but we have some good young guys who will have several years in the system...

    Interesting thought. +1

I understand what you're saying, but it's also not realistic. He's going to bring his offense with him regardless of what fans want. He's being paid $3 million to coach and succeed and he's going to do it his way, which includes a new offense.

  • While I love Pittman and think he is a great coach I totally understand what CBJ is doing here. You need to understand that CBJ offense is totally different from what we have traditionally ran here at UT. His offense is more from the Urban Meyer mold. Fast paced spread with a QB who can move the pocket. lots of zone read and reverses and stuff that you saw with tebow and harvin at florida. I think CBJ feels more comfortable bringing the o line coach that has been with him for 6 years than trying to teach pittman his philosophy!

Hey, I'm excited about a change in offensive philosophy, CDD was attempting to move towards an up=tempo offense which from what I've read, is something CBJ had instituted at UC, does not sound like his Spread is a "pure" system, and Jones said a Coach has to adapt to the personnel he has available.

I have always liked the pressure a mobile QB puts on a defense. Loved having Peyton and the pure "pro-style" offense, that offense seems to me to be most successful when the personnel is available, but maybe we'll win a few with scheme and preparation rather than simply trying to line up most 5-stars.... need quality athletes, but great coaches win games here and there while they are building the program looking for the stud athletes...

Defensive coordinator choice, will be interesting to watch unfold....

  • It has nothing to do with if Pittman was good or not. Butch jones isn't discrediting anything Pittman done this year. He feels more comfortable w a guy he's been coaching w over the years that obviously Does a good Job and he trusts. Yes, Pittman did great this year but you've gotta trust the new coach. He knows what he needs for his system. VFL.

while i agree that if you have a peyton manning the pro style is obviously the best choice, but unfortunately a peyton manning only comes around about once every ten or more years. IMHO I believe at the college level the athletic dual threat QB is the way to go unless you have that sure fire hall of famer like peyton! We won our national championship with an athlete at QB! see Cam Newton, Tim Tebow, Johny Football, Connor Shaw, even Arron Murray can run!

  • I'm not shocked we're losing Pittman, but it is disappointing. Given the change in scheme it does make sense though.

I'm kinda of amazed at how much some wanting to keep Hinshaw though. IMO he's basically all recruiter, I'm not real impressed with him as an actual coach. In fact I'd trade Hinshaw for Tee all day long.

Really I'm much more concerned about the DC and coaches on that side of the ball.

Hey, let's start our very own rumor and watch it go viral!!

I hear Gruden is in the running to coach QB's on CBJ staff :-)!! Tired of MNF but didn't want the pressure of being HC. Only problems are he still wants to be the highest paid CFB coach in the land and wants to be able to tell the HC and AD what to do!

I think the run blocking was very good. The problem is that we still don't have a back who can break a tackle or make a move in the open field.

  • I'm glad we are keeping Graham and would love to see Martin back. It was bad enough to see him at USC but if he ends up in Bama, I will barf until I die.

I'm not sure about Pittman. The Oline obviously improved but the biggest jump for linemen is always between their soph and jr year. Also, he was suppose to have all of these connections with the Carolina's. Do we even have a single recruit from there? How's he done in recruiting?

Hate to lose Pittman. DB coaches, Chaney, & maybe Hinshaw too. I understand, but I hate it.

IMO two "must keeps" are Graham and Pittman. Hinshaw a distant third and basically because of his recruiting connections. Haven't we had a RC on staff before who didn't coach a position? Cheney did ok for us but don't see CBJ keeping either coordinator. Clean house on D and ST staffs! Problem with Pittman is CBJ has an OL coach who has been with him at both HC jobs (Mahoney?) And probably wants to stay with him if he'll come. And CBJ has yet to call and seek my opinion on all the above :-)

when we hired pittman i thought that would get us back in north c ..recruiting and hadnt happen yet
far as i know..back when we was good under fulmer we had some very good recruites from there

as for coach jones i can see why he would want all his boys to coach with..they know him and does
things his way..and if we go to a different scheme..having pittman would only hold back players
wouldnt mix well..i get it..but we better keep atleast hinshaw for recruiting...which i think he will
if tee doesn't come..tee comes then i have know problem with that switch..tee&graham recruiting
should be easy for instate....go vols...team jones
