Vols talk problems, solutions

The Tennessee basketball team hasn't sunk, but the Vols are at least taking on water. But several players told govols247 why they believe things will get better.

  • Reading these comments its no wonder we are struggling. This teams lacks confidence and trust right now. They need to just go out and play and forget the clutter.

  • unreal from last year to this year..turnovers and missed foul shots is our big killer
no 1 wants to step up and lead..no leadership whats so ever..in my eyes they look like the football team, just took the pads off and put shorts and shirt's nike's on.
no fire anywhere on the squad at all..lacking desire or something.

I don't pretend to have inside knowledge of our kids but I've said for several weeks that the guys seem afraid to shoot the ball. The problem could be confidence I guess, it just seems sometimes like they are afraid of something.

  • What was our foul shooting last game? Twenty something for twenty something. Confidence is the key. The fear is oozing out of the players right now. I hate to say it, but we are down to focusing on only one thing and do it over and over again - take care of the ball. Let's play the next game with less than 10 turnovers and watch the confidence come back in buckets.

  • One thing certain - Coach Martin can't play for these guys. Hope they understand that really soon.

  • Whatever the reason, the chemistry is not there, the fundamental pieces of winning a game are not there, and I am starting to wonder why these players and their coach do not seem to click. These are rough times. I agree with Jarnell, I truly expected better results this year.

  • They play very tight. CCM has a quick hook!!
And there's no flow to anything they do.
CCM wants to hang his hat on defense, & that's great, but we don't play very good defense. No press, no half court trap, nothing but man to man. So,, it's hard for me to understand what the heck is going on!! Not a fun team to watch that's for sure.
His substitution pattern is completely confusing!!! 1 game a guy will play, & play significant minutes,& the next,,,, not @ all??
A guy that's kind of hot on offence, & lord we need any & all the offence we can get, gets yanked for no apparent reason??
    Uuugghhhh!
They talk a good game with the mics n front of em,, but talking & doing r 2 different things! It's like they are playing not to lose instead of playing to win!! JMO

  • no point guard and rarely quick decisions in paint have doomed us. When Jarnell decides what to do as he receives ball, it helps. Really missing Maymon, but a true point on both ends would help.

  • welcome to the board, drvol. Please post early and often.

By the way, you're the only person in this thread who nailed it, IMO. When you have a decent point guard, you don't have turnovers and your scorers get good shots. Plus, he's usually a stopper on defense.

  • "And they plan to start that process with a win Saturday at South Carolina (12-10, 2-7) in Colonial Coliseum."

The game is on Sunday isn't it?

  • One thing I am taking from this year is that we all may have been really underestimating Maymon a whole lot

Well that's one upvote for the redhead and one downvote for Wes.

a true point guard and consistent jump shooter would help this team tremendously. As it is, the offense is clunky and inconsistent. no one fears our perimeter game. We dump the ball in to Stokes or Hall and they get collapsed on, no jump shooters to knock down the open look who the post guys can kick it to, etc..
