We aren't so bad

  • I'm telling you what guys...after florida's dominance of LSU and NCstate beating Florida state...we might not be so bad. I'm definitely feeling pretty confident that we have one of the best offenses in the country.

JMO, but I think people are making WAY too much about how NC State looked against FSU, or how Florida looked against LSU, or how Georgia looked against South Carolina...and comparing those individual games and circumstances to UT's football team. Every game stands on it's own. Things change from week to week. Weird things happen...as soon as you think you have a team figured out, they do something completely different the next week. I wouldn't take too much from anything that happened today.

    I agree to an extent.
Regardless, it makes us look better.
    And that's a good thing.

  • I watched the entire GA/SC game and they looked horrible. Think about this: Vanderbilt and Kentucky came closer to beating SC than Georgia did. They didn't show up and SC was dialed in playing hard from kickoff. That's what happens.

I don't think we can take what happens to other teams out of context. We are capable of playing a lot better and our problem is mainly on defense. If we don't give up these backbreaking plays all the time we probably could have a chance in these games. We have to fix the outside run defense though. It's incredibly bad right now. There are teams that don't have the talent TN has on defense who can stop some of these plays. The encouraging thing is it is correctable!

  • Looking at the UGA-SC game, what hurt the Bulldogs the most today was also what kept UT in the game last week - the lack of a good run defense. But where SC excelled and UT did not was preventing those long plays along the edges. That was where UGA got a lot of points against the UT defense, and SC was able to shut them down on the sides. It was also interesting to note that Clowney said in the postgame interview that they were able to anticipate the snap count because the UGA QB would tap the center on the hip when he was ready for the ball. In the middle of all of this "SC is better than we thought" and "we can't compete with USCe" talk, there is one thing being overlooked - they only scored 35 against UGA. If you take away the one pick 6, UT scored the same amount of points as USC, and could have scored more were it not for those turnovers.

In my mind, the two offenses (UT and USCe) are roughly equivalent if you're using their respective performances against UGA as your barometer. But I think that the Volunteer OL is better than the Gamecocks' OL, and that might well make the difference come kickoff in Columbia...

  • I don't get the need to be so negative all the time about UT Football.

We lost to a very good UF team that just wore down LSU like we were worn down.
We lost to a very good UGA team that didn't show up against a very good Scar team and got killed.
We beat an NC State team that just pulled off a monster upset against a very good FSU team.

Nothing that happened yesterday changes the fact that this team needs to learn how to win close games. I don't think anybody is saying we are a top 10 program right now. But what is apparent is we played some pretty good football teams, we beat one of them and if we had executed better in the 4th quarter we would have beaten all of them.

  • Yesterday didn't change my opinion that UT's offense can put 30 on anybody, because nobody can, not even Bama, can leave both Hunter and Patterson in one on one coverage outside and Bray can make throws that most QBs can't. Throw in Rivera being very difficult to cover for most college LBs and Rogers improvement, UT's offense will score on everyone it faces and if they focus they can run on anyone. That being said, nothing yesterday changed, IMO, UT's defensive problems.

Agree about the offense the problem is that you beat the good teams with defense and we have a long, long way to go there.

I disagree that UGA is "very good". They are continuing their pattern of beating average and bad teams and losing to ranked teams. They haven't had a significant win since 2007. They may go 10-2 but they are a soft 10-2 and we had every chance to beat them in Athens and failed. Thar's why I keep saying stop judging teams solely on their record. Mississippi State is 5-0 and hasn't played anyone.

Agreed that MSU hasn't played anyone and hasn't looked particularly good even against some lesser opponents, I am just objecting to the general negativity of the board.

Yes, we failed to put away a very good UF team and we failed to win a road game against a very talented UGA team. We also beat a team convincingly that just beat FSU.

All in all, we seem to be a pretty good football team that doesn't know how to win in the 4th quarter. Isn't that what people were expecting going into the year.

The reason we beat NC State is the same reason we lost to UGA and UF. Big plays that broke for quick scores. If not for the three fast scores against NC State, who knows how that would have turned out. We have to stop these which puts us in a hole and forces us to throw. Stop big plays, run the ball, control the time of possession. This is how floordah beat LSU.
